I decided that I wanted to add a kydex cheek piece to my Crown.
At first I was planning to make my own cheek piece but I happened to already have one from https://matthewsfabrication.com/ called the Bear Paw Right; buttpad widest point 1.75" for my Mossberg MVP, so I placed it on my gun for some inspiration.
It fit wonderfully so I decided to just get another on from Matthew's Fabrication!
The Bear Paw right has a larger cut-out on the right side, which to my eye doesn't look as good on the Crown stock as the cut-out on the left.
I contacted Matthew and asked about getting both sides the same. He said no problem, just add "Bear Paw Universal side with the straight bottom cut on both sides" to the Order Notes when placing the order. No additional charges were added to the cost!
The cheek piece arrived a few days later, with the included 1/4-20 through bolts and knobs that come standard from Matthew's Fabrication.
I decided to use four metric threaded Inserts (m6x15mm) and four stainless screws instead of the overkill for an airgun through bolts.
I drilled a hole under the buttpad to test the use of the inserts in the soft composite stock. A 5/16" drill 15mm deep seemed to work well.
Once I determined the optimal hole locations I clamped the stock to my bench and then clamped a drill guide to the stock. I used a drill stop to control the depth of the holes too.
The drilling went well!
An example of the insert being screwed in.
Both in.
All the way up and down.
More than sturdy enough. Very pleased with the outcome!
