Snowpeak Krale And UPS Import charge??

Anyone have a problem recently with Krale and UPS import charges?

I paid a little under $600 for my P35X from Krale which includes shipping on 05/09/2025. Now, I just get an email from UPS saying I owe 859.67 USD to be paid on delivery!! Krale and the UPS email show the same tracking number.

I emailed Krale for advice. But obviously, I'm not accepting the P35X if forced to pay that import fee (assuming it's legit). I also logged into my UPS account, but it also shows the same fee.

Changing so fast, one never knows what is accurate any more...

IIRC the de minimis exemption (used to be $800) went away, maybe May 2(?) for items from PRC + Hong Kong
US CBP is requiring shipping companies to maintain a bond equal to the value of import duties they will now have to collect, and to collect such duties from receiving entity in the U.S. (Was it DHL which stopped accepting shipments into the U.S. for a bit, so they could figure things out and not be left on the hook for uncollected customs duties?)
Perhaps CBP now requires any importer to specify country of origin of goods to prevent PRC from circumventing duties by shipping via 3rd party countries.
Isn't the current duty on China about 140%? $600 value times 140% duty = $840, or a value near what UPS now wants from you.

The big problem might be that if you don't accept the item and pay the big duties, Krale may not be responsible and you might not get your purchase money back. Or maybe only a part.

"Yes, Houston, we have a problem here". . :(.

My dilemma will be to either pay $1440 (600+840) for the P35X, or.... pay $600 for no P35X. Darn!!

I still have to hear back from Krale, to see what my options are if any. Maybe they'll give me a credit or partial credit or something.

But, if nothing changes... I'll probably decline the UPS shipment, and be out $600. Having to pay $1440 for a P35X would bother me even more.

Also, if I decline shipment, I could wait until no import fees and buy it again for $600. So, now it only cost me $1200 :).

Has to be a mistake, tariffs from the Netherlands aren't 143%
But remember - the stated goal of increased tariffs and elimination of the $800 de minimis exclusion against PRC: (From The White House site) - "COMBATING CHINA’S ROLE IN THE OPIOID CRISIS: President Trump is targeting deceptive shipping practices by Chinese-based shippers, many of whom hide illicit substances, including synthetic opioids, in low-value packages to exploit the de minimis exemption."

This being the case, I am quite certain that CBP is demanding to know country of origin in shipments. This is something which Krale is not going to lie about on Customs paperwork.

With the Snowpeak guns being made in PRC, that is how their Customs duties will be calculated. Otherwise anything the PRC sellers may wish to sell would just have to be routed through a 3rd party nation, and therefore avoid PRC duties? Not likely CBP is gonna let that happen.

No, I dont agree. There have been many companies that have routed products to warehouses in India and European countries to side step the high CCP tariffs. And Krale is not located in CCP.
