King heavies out of 380 mm barrel

Has anyone shot king heavies with success out of the 380 barrel on the crown? I don’t know if it would be able to shoot them fast enough as I know they like to be shot at higher speeds. If not I might be looking to upgrade to a 500 mm barrel (the 700 is just to long for me).

Assuming by King’s heavy you are talking about the 34 grain .25 pellets, they like to be around 820-850 fps and the crown MK2 should be able to shoot them well closer to the 820 fps range, 850fps is possible but tuning could be tricky/finicky. First Gen crown might not be able to shoot the heavy much pass 800FPS but I could be wrong. Try not to focus on the speed and over power your barrel, might be easier to get the 500mm or 600mm barrel especially if you shoot off the bench, at the very least they are much easier to tune.

My 1st gen .25 continuum 380mm maxed out right at 800fps with 34gr. I had to run the reg up to 150bar. They grouped decent but the 25.4gr would always out shoot them buy a good margin from my gun. The MKII Crowns might have a tad more power but the barrel length is the limiting factor.

500mm barrel would probably get you up around 860-870. I think they will like that speed much better.

My experience has been that a(unmodified) Crown MK2 with a 600mm barrel is capable of getting the .25 King Heavies over 900fps(which minimum to get consistent accuracy out of King Heavies or slugs beyond 50 yards). The 380mm will definitely not get a King Heavy moving fast enough to be consistently accurate. The 380mm performs very well with Hades or regular Kings, but not much else.

Ted Holdover won RMAC bench rest with .25 heavies at 830fps, pellets do have a sweet spot for best accuracy at 100 yards but they certain won’t need 900fps to be accurate at all. I shot heavies and hades very accurately down to 450 FPS at closer range of 35 yards, the heavies have a known sweet spot range between 830-860 fps. It is not saying that it can’t be accurate at 900FPS, just tiny bit not as good at the sweet spot range, we are taking about difference of 1/4-1/2 MOA at 100 yards so most shooters outside of bench rest crowd will likely not notice. Finding the most efficient which is the most accurate tune is more important, which is harder with shorter barrels.

Out of my neither of my two Crown MK2 nor my MK1 using 600mm pellet A, 600mm Superior, 600mm Superior Heavy, 380mm pellet A, or 380mm Superior liners, I have had absolutely NO luck in achieving anything consistently accurate at 100 yards using .25 King Heavy or .25 King Heavy MK2 at any of the slower speeds(that Ted reportedly shot the King Heavy thru his Impact with to win EBR) that are "supposed to be a sweetspot". I can always see them start spiraling at 75 - 100 yards until I get the speed up over 900 fps to stabilize them(I notice this same phenomenon when shooting .22 MRDs, .177 Monsters and any other non-small waisted pellets). They are all fairly stable and accurate at slower speed at closer distances, but I have to get the fps up to stabilize them and keep them from spiraling at farther distances.

This is just my verified experimentation with the equipment listed. Your milage may vary.

I shoot them with success from a 400mm barrel in an unregulated gun. Low shot count and tons of air usage but accurate. Mid 800s on speed. My 580mm barrel nearly doubles the shotcount at the same power.

I had no issues at 100 yards with heavies back in the days with my 380mm .25 barrel shooting even 760-780 FPS, mostly 1.5 inch groups but I was very new at the time. Like I said it is very difficult to tune the much shorter barrel, I would recommend the longest barrel one can put up with just because it’s is so much easier to tune. If you want to reap the benefit of compact barrel then be prepared to spend some time understanding and working on the tune.

if you see spiraling at longer distance it could be too much spin and/or damaged skirt. However don’t rule out they have been spiraling from the muzzle just because you didn’t/can’t see it, too much muzzle blast till do that and high power tune on a short barrel will get you muzzle blast in a huge hurry if not fine tuned correctly.
