Just picked up a new Air Venturi HP compressor to replace my Carette ...........

First a question on the AV. When it fills my tanks and it gets to that point 3000 psi to 4400psi where it has to work the hardest it makes a intermittent clunk randomly. It almost sounds like a deep Buck Grunt with a mechanical baritone echo. Sometimes it is one Clunk and at other times it will be followed by a couple weaker blats. I was wondering if I could call in a Big Old Buck with it but Old Bucks don't get big from being stupid. LOL! It is a sound I have never heard from the 2 shoe boxes and my Carette and have never heard anyone on this forum mention it. Do you think that it should be something I should be concerned with? The black crap that came out of the oil / water separator when I bled it was pretty bad too.

I followed the owners manual and it did work well considering this noise I mention. It is definitely louder than the Carette and a little heavier. It may have a little more power too. The Power shut off works nice and I like the water tank system that came with it also. I did the 10 minute break in with it purging the O/W separator every couple of minutes. Then put it to work. The working temp never exceeded 70 C per the temp gauge on it. Wished it had come with a hour meter. Overall with the free shipping I think it was a pretty good deal providing that Buck wanders away and stays away at least until next hunting season.

I'd return the AV and request for a free shippers return label.

Lots of info doing compressor search on this forum.

$2700 is the minimum for an already proven reliable compressor. NUVAIR Coltri MCH6.

Anything less you are on your own.

The Yong Heng seems to be the favored brand in the sub $2700 compressor category with lots of DIY repair info and the parts are relatively cheap.

Hey Bill, sorry to say but it sounds like it has serious issues (been there). I'd bet the HP seals on the high pressure second stage have crapped out and letting oil from the crank case pass by and then detonate on the compression stroke. This blow-by will indeed give you the black crud that oozes out of the filter tower. I wouldn't run it anymore and address the problem. I've been down this road before but I wouldn't think it would happen so fast to a new AV but I think it really don't matter with the Chines compressors. It could be a year or two years down the road or in your case brand new. Let me know if I can help.

JKing, When my Carette stopped I noticed my coolant tubes were empty. I was worried that some of my coolant was in my crankshaft so I drained my oil. No sign of water in the oil so I added new oil and filled the water lines back up. I started it up two or three times for about 10 seconds to see if it would run and it sounded ok. So I then started it back up and about 1000 psi it started spraying water out the relieve valve on the bottom of the water pump. I shut it off and took the brass nut off that housed the spring and poppet valve. It was a little carboned up so I cleaned it up and turned the water pump up side down to check where the poppet seated out. That looked OK but I blew it out anyway reinstalled the RV and turned the Water pump back 180 degrees renewed the coolant and started back up. Same results but this time it only ran for about 5 seconds before it started blowing coolant out the RV. I studied up on removing the 1st and 2nd stage from a extensive tear down documented documented very professionally on this forum that I had printed off while I was considering buying the Carette. It mentioned some seals that needed to be replaced every time the stages were separated. So I had called Joe about the problem and it was new to him but he did say those seals were actually gaskets. So He is sending me a new water pump that he is taking off another machine because he didn't stock them along with new gaskets if that wasn't the problem. So that's where I stand on the Carette.

The AV seems to do its job other that random clunk I hear which I find a little concerning and the reason for the Topic I posted. I tried calling PYA about it but didn't get through. Will try again Monday. I have read quite a few very positive reviews on this model AV so I'm hoping the noise will go away. Only hear it when the pressure gets over 3000 psi.

Thanks, Bill Day

Seems going from the Carett to the AV is akin to jumping from the frying pan it into the fire. Several of my friends have had terrible results from them. All Crank breakages.

Again, in the end, more money spent than one decent compressor. GRRRRRR!!

Carbon? . Classic case of improper oil which causes carbon build up, hotter running and very hard on the valves and causes tremendous back pressure. Hummmmm!

Another song. Another one Bites the Dust!, Another one blow and another one blow's, Another one bites the dust!

I remember my AV doing that as well but like I said I think its oil partially combusting. The black goo I had was as black as black can be. My AV currently is running as good as it ever has but they do require frequent fixes or at least mine has. I'm probably pushing 4 or 5 years on mine and I've had a few issues. The worst being when the armature shaft snapped in half. That was a major tear down. If you still have the box I'd for sure have it replaced.

Sorry, I'm no help on the Carette, never been around one.

Jking, I am planning on getting it replaced. Thinking back when I did my 10 min breakin they ask you to do in the owners manual. I run it without being hooked to a compressor or dead head for 10 mintues. Every two minutes I bled the oil/water separator into a white rag and each time I bled it this black oily stuff purged out. This morning I went out and checked it over again. The new oil I had put in it was about 3/16 th of a inch below where it was suppose to be when I filled it up. I drained the oil out of it and refilled it again. The oil that came out was on the dark side and it was almost clear when I put it in. I turned the water pump on and then the compressor. I had put a dead head in the fill hose line to watch the temp and pressure coming up. I also noticed the water tank was still full but the water wasn't circulating through the clear hoses. About the same time the pressure guage was reading 3000 psi the clunk sound stated and immediately shut it down. The compressor never come close to over heating and about a half hour later I noticed the oil level was low again. So something is definitely wrong with this machine and from the breakin period. I'm going to take some pics of what was coming out of it from the breakin run and at 3000psi when I purged the O/W separator after I shut it down. First pic is the white rag I reference. The 2nd pic is the plastic funnel that the purge went into that was attached to a hose that captured and drained it into a 5 gallon bucket. The 3rd pic is funnel/tube setup into the bucket. The fourth pic is the results of the purge into the bucket after I shut the AV down. Sometimes pictures are better than words.
