Just ordered myself a Diana model 48...some questions.

Hello all. Today I decided to finally purchase myself a rifle I have been eyeballing for quite some time. I ordered a Diana mod 48 through Airgun’s of Arizona. This is the first real “higher end” rifle I have had the oppyrtunity to add to my collection. I’m looking for any helpful information I should be aware of, and perhaps some scope recommendations as well. Thanks in advance!

Start with a good barrel cleaning, check your rifles stock screws for snugness (Dont go overboard.) They will probably loosen up again during break-in (500-1000 shots) so check them often. I will usually remove mine and give them a spritz of contact/brake cleaner (outdoors!),wipe them with a paper towel and apply a small drop of the BLUE locktite and snug them up sensibly. For the outside of the rifle,a light coat of Ballistol on a clean rag works well. I know You said that Your interested in a scope and as dirtbikerick said..get a solid mount. The UTG products ie;scopes seem to hold up well and there are a Bunch to choose from. A droop compensating mount is usually recommended, easily found at Pyramyd Air,ect. A suggestion would be to shoot Your new rifle with the open sights till it starts to "settle down" a little, this will save the frustration of zeroing the scope before the real accuracy begins to develop as the rifles internals wear-in....Although its totally up to You! Congrats on choosing an Awesome, durable ,high quality spring gun! Have fun,be safe and ENJOY!!

Great rifle! They get the job done!

Anyway...

Scope recommendation? There can be only one. Save your pennies till you have enough for an SWFA 6x scope. It is the perfect companion for this particular rifle. They cost as much as the rifle and would be cheap at twice the price. Don't believe me? Ask that one eyed bandit that roams around these parts.

When you close that breech don't get in a hurry. Two serious problems can happen at this point. You can get heavy handed, blow your timing and put too much pressure on the mechanism that closes the breech. If you do that, you will have to buy a new part. Much more likely is the possibility that a loose fitting pellet can drop out of the breech and you may not notice it. If that happens you can break your main spring. Just take your time and be careful. It is a very fine shooting rifle.

Never cared for the open sites on those, every one I have had ( my buddy's was much better ) the rear just jumped around, harder than using a bad scope, yours may be better tho.
Scope, think warranty first. Really.
UTG should work ( personally dont like their warranty) but if purchased at walmart and it goes south you should be back up & running fast. Hawke may well have replaced more scopes than any newer scope company but they are fast & easy to deal with.
Fire several tins then think about weither or not you would want to smooth it out with w tune kit - not needed but does make it so much nicer-.

One piece scope mount for sure and personally I would buy one with droop, but, you may need a drooper you really dont know untill you get it.

NYenthusiast, thanks for starting this thread, I was wondering the same thing. I just bought a Model 48 here on the classifieds from a great seller, Barkley9. If you ever have the chance to deal with him, don’t hesitate, he’s a great guy. Anyway, I bought mine to modify and set up for Field Target shooting and was I wondering what scope would be best for that application? I started shooting PCP and this is actually my first spring gun, so this is all new to me. I have heard many folks speak about the one piece “droop mount” several times. Can anyone explain to me what this is and why it’s used on this particular rifle? I have a James Maccari tune kit on the way that was recommended here on the forums by another member. This is supposed to smooth out the shot cycle and lower the guns energy level a bit but increase its consistency. Anyone know of a video that shows the proper and safe disassembly of the guns spring mechanism and or also other little tricks to perform while I have the rifle apart? Any info is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!

Thanks again for the helpful responses. I really do appreciate it. I am quite experienced with firearms, but am still learning all the ins and outs of proper air rifles. This rifle will not be used for one specific shooting discipline in my case. It will serve as more of a jack of all trades. It will mainly be used to blast spinners and other reactive targets. I’m certain it will also come in handy for dispatching pests. I think I would like whatever scope I choose to have variable magnification. I anticipate the max distance I would normally be shooting to be approximately 75 yds or so.
