Just how accurate can a 177 10m springer be with open sights at medium range?

I’m a big believer in magnification. Big magnification equals small groups right? Speed also helps. Look at what the ultimate BR shooters are shooting these days.

Something really sophisticated with lots of gadgets plenums scope mounts bench rests etc.

Or you could go old-style and see what you can do with an open sight 5 foot pound target rifle at medium range…

It would be interesting to see how many folks can beat this target with their high-powered PCPs, especially in 17 caliber.

There was going to be a contest, for all the springer guys. Who could shoot the smallest group with open sights at 42 yards. This was years ago at the beginning of the pandemic. It never happened. I decided to see what I could do anyway. Anything to keep my mind and body busy at the beginning of the pandemic was a good thing.

I wanted to shoot something really small. So I grabbed all my really nice Springers and started shooting. I wanted a one hole bug eye.

at 42 yards.

Then I realized that I was averaging around an inch or so with the groups, occasionally smaller. And realized I was not on the path to a bug eye group with my powerful springers.

So I grabbed my 150 FWB. I was able to get four shots in one little tiny hole but of course I pulled the fifth one a half an inch away, see pics.

Then I decided to try the 300, not 300s, plain 300. Jim E and I have been friends for many years. He picked me out to send this rifle to. He knew I would do a good job refinishing the stock. The metal is almost perfect. I have not really ever shot it much. It is gorgeous!!!

I shot a few groups, and then magic happened. They were all in one little Cloverleaf.

The group was shot with a 50-year-old rifle, still all original. Target sites, from a bench rest. Conditions were excellent. Pellet was 8.4 JSB. 5 ft pnd rifle …

I took pictures of the magic group, and many others. I also took some pictures of the set up. The groups were hitting below the dots drawn on the box, All I had to do was change the paper.

i had a little rws i redid long time ago with a reduced spring, polished all the innards and barrel and a good seal, lubes etc .. it would stack pellets but i was disenchanted with the power .. at the time i was engaged in a full combat war with the pests around here and considered it a failure because of the low power ..i gave it to my boy, hes prolly still got it somewhere ..

FWIW, I would disagree with considering 42 yards "medium range" when taking your parameters into consideration. First disqualifier being the sights, the second disqualifier is the power-level. In my opinion, given the disqualifiers applied, the shooting distance easily qualifies as EXTREME. Good shooting.

BTW and FWIW, this opinion of extreme airgun ranges is brought to you by the NUT often testing air pistols at 50 yards. But even he is not crazy enough to try it with iron sights! ;-)

My Wisconsin club BAGA once scaled up a 10 meter target bull at 50 yards and shot it with a 18 ft/lb Anshutz with iron sights, clear circle front sight. We were able to achieve 1/4" groups.

I have shot my 10 meter 5 ft/lb Feinwerkbau 603 single stroke at 45 yards and achieved similar results to yours. The best foe me were H and N Final Match and Vogel. These two pellets are identical.

Give them a try. Excellent shooting by you. So much fun at 5 ft/lbs.

i've been working with a single-stroke 10M gun. bench-rest at 50'.

soon as i do better at the shorter distance, i'll try the 25Y side of the home range.

a zero wind day for sure. shoots well under 500fps. ninja gun, better than I am, but a bee-fart and the pellet is off.

I love the input from the guys with the singlestroke pneumatics. Wonderful rifles. They are much easier to shoot than any type of spring piston rifle, even if it is a FWB and claims to be recoilless.

That said, shooting a single stroke pneumatic at 50 yards with either iron sights/target sites or a scope is very challenging and very fun.

That's actually quite incredible shooting. I recently shot an hw55 with target sights and did quite well for a new rifle. Nothing that good. However I have done long shooting with notch and post and got 3/4 inch at 40 yards once. I couldn't believe it. That was on my dads old 312 he had from childhood. I shot that thing thousands of times and just knew it so well that it worked out for me that time. The more you shoot the better you will get. If I were you I'd never get rid of that gun. Your clearly great with it.

This one was done in the UK way back in 1979. The winner of the first ever field Target shoot used his gun (this gun) in the practice session but quickly switched to a .22 Feinwerkbau Sport due to high wind on the day, and won….he shot a near perfect round. However, he later went onto bench rest his 300 at 50 yds, where he managed a 1/2 inch group in still wind.

Some gun, but at 6ftlbs needs still wind….it takes more than just great mechanics in the field.
