Grand daughter is 5'-5" tall, about 90 pounds (thin!). Been looking at the BSA Ultra JSR in .22, since I have that ammo and also the compressor for filling. It looks like it might be just the ticket, but am wondering how tough it is to cock with the straight bolt design. I think that a side lever would be MUCH better/easier to cock.

I currently have a WCI in .25, too heavy. 2 Crowns, one .25, one .22, but feel that they are too long in stock for a small stature. Also all 3 a tad too powerful for a newbie.

Any comments on the BSA above would be appreciated and thank you for your advice.

Hey Mike, how are you? All is well I hope. I know you're asking about a BSA but wanted to share this with you...My boys and I have been looking for a lightweight gun for my son Alex for quite a while. I talked to Charlie Frear a couple weeks ago and told him what we were looking for. We had narrowed it down to a Cricket, Veteran or Uragan.

Charlie suggested the Zbroia FC550 because it's light and short, with his power tune, which adds 100fps without adjusting the reg. hammer spring. My son fell in love with it immediately even though I was pushing for one of the others. We ended up buying it and just got it the other day.

It is super light, 6.5lbs plus scope/rings, it's crazy accurate, almost effortless to cock and very, very quiet without even using a moderator. Total, with the tune and shipping it was $964. You might not even want or need the tune, it could always be turned down for increased shot count. To say we were pleasantly surprised is an understatement! It shoots every pellet and slug that we've tested very accurately. After tweaking the HS just a tad, it now shoots the 18.13 JSB's at about 950fps and the 15.89gr. JSB's at over 1000fps very accurately! It has a proprietary 12 land-groove barrel which I've never owned before but seems to work great. Shouldering this gun is effortless, even for my 10 year old Cooper who now loves this gun too. It's just comfortable and easy to use for a smaller kid. There are a lot of nice little touches like magnets to hold the side lever closed, 300BAR, tensioned barrel, shroud, reliable, easy to use magazines, etc... Everything is aluminum or brass and finished really well. I took it apart this morning to check things out and it is super easy to work on and supposedly, very reliable too. We haven't shot it that much to really know about reliability but I'll take Charlie's word for it.

They're a pretty unknown company thus far, other than being on the American Airgunner challenge the other day but they are really nice and shoot great. I think they will gain a huge following once they get some recognition. The FC550 and FC450 are full bull pups whereas the Kozak is a little longer and is a semi-pup. The FC550 also is available as an FC450 which is 10cm shorter, weighs 6lbs, but also has a smaller air cylinder, 230cc vs. 290cc. both at up to 300BAR. 

I just wanted to throw that out there for you Mike. I understand it's not what you were asking about but I wanted you to make you aware, take it or leave it. I really think this gun will fill the bill for you and you can't go wrong with the price. You won't be disappointed!

On a side note, do you still have the FX Crown? Do you use it often? I kind of miss that gun!

I recently bought a 177 12fpe BSA ULTRA JSR it's real real real short extremely light weight not much effort to cock compared to a Marauder. LOUD!!! But has 1/2unf threads at the end of the barrel that a Huggett fixes. May be too small for a 5.5 ft girl. Especially length of pull but I really like mine due to compactness and its light weight which is the very reason I bought it. Next to one of my HW100k shorty bullpups.

Yo, Aloha, what's up buddy? How long ago did you get the Zbroia, was it the FC series or Kozak? Ours shoots everything we've tried super accurately! I'm impressed that it's not finicky at all. It's actually the least pellet/slug finicky gun I've ever owned! Maybe my boys just shoot better than you! Bahahahaaa! 

How much are those BSA Ultra JSR's? When considering suggesting the Zbroia to Mike, the price difference was the only thing I wasn't sure of.

The BSA won't be hard to cock for a little one? That was one of the reasons I didn't buy a Priest for my boys couple of years ago, neither of my boys could come close to cocking it. and certainly not repeatedly during a day of shooting. Up until that point I hadn't given it much thought at all. Even our Brocock Bantam was hard for Cooper to cock when he was 9yrs and it wasn't even that bad. Something I think about more often now, that's for sure and Mike's grand daughter is small.

They're $599 to $699 depending on what power level you want. Cheaper $599 6fpe or 12fpe $100 more. They are a tad under 5 pounds in weight unscoped like a Benjamin Discovery or Maximus but really! short. I have HEARD to just Buy the other air tube to swap power back and fourth if so inclined whether it's 30-35 shots or like 100 shots SO I HEARD. If anyone got problems cocking this little thing like a 5 year old just put the butplate against the knee and cock it easy peasy. Adults with mobility or dexterity problem just point it down hold bolt right hand pull up use left hand cup around the action while other hand pulls back cocking handle. If that won't work then Miyagi have to teach you wax on-wax off right circle wax on left circle wax off remember to breathe very important.

I got the Kozak cuz it was cheap! Well it needed some work! IDK! SO THATS WHY IT WAS CHEAP!!!

Hello Gents!

And thank you both for your insights. The shortness and weight weight of the BSA is exactly why I was considering it as the go to choice. While she is not frail she is not as strong as one might think for a teen.

I have taught many peeps how to shoot a shotgun and most will pick up the shotgun and immediately lean back to counterweight/balance the load. How many times have you seen this too, lots I would bet. The main thing to me is to allow a LOT of fun to happen. I considered airsoft, but find that they seem not accurate enough. If ya can't hit a bullseye often enough, ya get bored. So they are out.

I considered a barrel cocker, but that too may leave her exhausted after a short time, making it too much like work and NOT fun. Workout, maybe if she really gets into it and would like to continue, but I want this to take hold so am opting for the easiest reset.

I failed at teaching my daughter these things as I am a very good (not bragging here) handgun shooter (thus the name Revoman....revolvers) and I made the mistake of not making my lessons FUN enough to keep her interested (I'm guessing), so don't wish to discourage, making that mistake again.

I DO still have Ol' Blue, but with the latest Continuum, don't shoot it as much as before that acquisition. It's still very accurate when I do take it out for a run though (so ya know).

YO! --=-- I thank you much for your insights on your owned BSA JSR. Since it has a shorter stock it seems like a decent choice as long as the reset/cocking isn't too much to conquer.

Again, I'm not so interested in power, though it might be nice to tune it up in time, so the low power .22 seems like a fit.

I am completely open to all suggestions though and thank you Gents profusely for your input.

Again, I thank all of you for this most valuable input.

Most of the reasons stated in the video are the reasons why I basically chose this particular air rifle, coupled with the fact that I already have the air and .22 pellets.

I'm thinkin' that this is the right rifle for my grand daughter and will now look into the best pricing.

Great to have this Forum to bounce this off of!

I have its big brother the Ultra SE. Personally I went with the .177 because of the barrel length and air capacity. I started all the little airgunners in my life with conventional rifles. Later in life they can choose to try to convince themselves to like a bullpup. There are things about bullpups that could easily discourage young shooters. The Kid in the video probably would have missed the rams hang down with a bullpup because he was canting the gun slightly. Conventional rifles are more forgiving. The kid pimping a BSA JSR is a fortunate kid.

You alsmight check out this thread from Franklink. He does a good job of reviewing and has a 6 or 7 year-old that shoots it in his review.

Seems to be a nice, well made rifle with a BUNCH more shots per charge than the BSA. A P-Rod with rifle stock might be a consideration as well.
