Results July TEXtreme Bench-Rest Silhouette match report

In accommodating TEXtreme shooters’ requests for more Extreme Field Target practice for AoA’s Extreme FT event at 2024 EBR by replacing our April Bench-Rest Silhouette match with an extra EFT match, it had been six months since our last BRS match (before last Saturday). Nevertheless, and considering the excellent weather forecast, attendance was disappointing. A half-dozen shooters shot a dozen score-cards.

Perhaps those taking a pass knew something the forecasters didn’t, as it felt hotter than the forecasts sounded. I’d venture a guess it wasn’t a degree above 99; however the humidity must have been about as high.🥵 Winds were typically tricky.

Per his most-infuriating habit🤬, Jim Martin won all three classes… AGAIN!🤯 The only thing keeping me from breaking his trigger finger is the fact he ranks near the top of my Favorite Humans list, and he has no😱…. Never mind!

Only two Slug Class shooters was one too few to award a Match Winner hat pin. But being the shrewd manipulator he is, Jim found a way to win a Slug Class hat pin anyway. His excellent 35/40 included ten-in-a-row pigs; hence also a hat pin. Jim shot .22 slugs at 900 FPS in his Athlon scoped Panthera. High five, Buddy!🖐️ Errrrr… uhhhhh... correction-Great shooting, Jim! Need a hand installing that hat pin?

For the sake of all you hanging on every word about my airgun slug journey, suffice to say I finished ‘second’ in Slug Class with my fine Chinese custom .177 QB/Gauntlet hybrid (forty years in the making). Did I say “suffice to say”? I lied! 🤥

Little doubt I’d have finished second no matter how many other shooters might have contested Slug Class (that didn’t). I consider my 32/40 in those tricky winds a higher score than I thought a .177 air rifle capable of (in human hands). Correct me if I’m wrong, but 32/40 may be the .177 caliber BRS record. Regardless, it did get me two ten-in-a-row hat pins. 🐔 & 🐷

Five shooters contested the 100 Foot Pound Pellet class. Jim Martin’s fine 30/40 was good enough for not only the 100 Foot Pound (Pellet) Match Winner hat pin, but another ten-in-a-row pig pin. JM used an Arken Zulus scoped .25 Panthera, shooting 33.95 pellets “940-ish” FPS. Excellent shooting, Jim!

A newcomer to BRS, Paul Kocurek posted an excellent 27/40 in his first, trial-by-fire BRS effort. Paul shot 56 grain Zan pellets at 885 FPS in his Athlon Heras scoped .30 Kricket. And although there was no Second Place 100 FP Pellet Class award, PK nabbed a ten-in-a-row rams hat pin to commemorate his impressive first BRS competition. Great shooting, Paul! (y)

Five also contested 35 Foot Pound Class. Of course Jim Martin won it; posting 24/40 with his .22 Red Wolf topped with an Athlon scope and shooting 18 grain “somethings” “slooowww” for the 35 FP Match Winner hat pin. ‘Slooowww’ being a relative term, and 935 FPS being as fast as falls within the 35 foot pound limit with 18 grain projectiles, we can assume JM didn’t exceed a single FPS faster than 935. Correction- Can we assume JM didn’t exceed a single FPS faster than 935?

Knowing that shrewd competitor, how he rolls, and the depths of his depravity… correction- character, YES, we can assume he didn’t exceed a single FPS faster than 935. That said, also knowing he misses nary a trick to maximize his superior shooting skills, we can also safely assume he didn’t shoot a single FPS below 935! Nice shooting, Amigo!

Jim Clarke’s 22/40 was good for second in 35 Foot Pound. JC shot a .22 Red Wolf wearing a 6-24X Hawke Optic, shooting 18.0 grain AA pellets only 930 FPS. Given Jim’s 5 FPS handicap to Jim, no wonder Jim finished second to Jim. That’s almost .4 FP handicap!

Ever effervescent, Susan Gehrig came excruciatingly close to nabbing a ten-in-a-row hat pin in her first BRS experience by hammering 9 of 10 chickens. And she did so with a borrowed rifle! If we had a Miss Congeniality award I have little doubt Susan would give Your’s Truly a good run for her money. Thankfully Susan has as excellent sense of humor as her impressive shooting skills, lest I wouldn’t poke fun at her like this. By the way Paul, please don’t teach Susan any knife-handling skills! (I had to leave my fourth wife after the third time she stabbed me. I sure miss Lorena!)

As I might have mentioned before, it’s hard to have fun shooting BB guns with a bunch of good-natured, fun-loving, like-minded airgunners shooting little steel animal targets. Nevertheless, I try.

After the match, four of us continued trying to have fun over excellent Mexican food. Some recognized the depths of my supreme wisdom in cooling my overheated core with a LARGE frozen margarita, and followed suit.🥂 This trying to have fun business could become a habit. 🤪

The things I do for Y’all!

Love,
Ron & Maggyy
