JSB quality issue?

A friend of mine has a .30 cal impact and had a tin of 44.75 JSB’s that looked like this. They had an auidible “zing” to them when shot.

These were purchased from PyramydAir and the tins had the large white circle sticker on the bottom so no date, die#,employee #,batch #... after watching the JSB “Shot Show” video and they talked about each and every pellet being inspected by a group of 32 women I have some doubts. Anyone else see anything like this?

Is anybody getting tins with the red “ID” tag on the bottom anymore or has that ship sailed? He has a few year or so old tins from AOA when he purchased the gun that have the red tags.

Are you saying the entire tin was like that? If so, then I'm pretty shocked.

If not - I hesitate to say it but, I can see that happening during the shipping process. That looks like the bottom of the skirt of another pellet being smashed against the head of the affected pellet. I'd bet it matches up perfectly. This is the same thing that causes smiley's on the heads of pellets.

I've questioned the "Carefully Selected" claim quite a few times and have found easily identifiable variations from tin to tin. I accept that you can't catch everything and I accept that it's manufacturing and things happen. It's easy to accept when you put it into the perspective of a couple million pellets.

I'd like to see them put about 25-50 less pellets in the large tins to help stop the smiley's. But then, would the pellets bash into one another? It's a delicate balance of "danged if you do, danged if you don't." But, this is why we sort out pellets.

If the whole tin was like that... wow! I've had some rough tins in the past but, nothing like that! PA has always been happy to replace a bad tin without hesitation. Maybe, give them a call. Then, shoot the "zingers" just for fun!! :)

Looking again, I just noticed some more differences, other than the obvious. The rim around the edge of the head is a different thickness, the "waist" is also a slightly different thickness, and in the 2nd and 4th pics the angle of the skirt looks different as well.

In my experience many manufacturer's pushed by demand exceeding their production capacity reach a point of declining quality in order to meet demand for their products.

I have seen a drastic decline in the pellet quality over the past 3 years as demand has increased due to the growing popularity of Airguns ... particularly PCP's. Deformed and "runt" pellets have been in several cans.

I ordered 3 tins of JSB .22 18.13gr 500 count through AOA,
and the majority of pellets in all 3 tins were unusable IMO. Bent/crushed skirts, not uniform, inconsistent dia, etc.
They were so bad that after sorting through them all, I ended up with less than a tin of 500 that were acceptable..

The rest of them were so bad that most were thrown away, and the ones that were fired were so inconsistent
that there was no way they'd group... they'd just result in what looked like a shotgun/birdshot spray pattern.. *sigh*

I've used JSB for years - Exclusively..

At this point, I'm sick of spending more for 'the name' + $15.00 s/h just to end up frustrated / angered..

I switched to H&N [for now] and couldn't be happier..

Sam -

PS: I've been shooting indoors *Trying* to test different rifles for accuracy..
When that can't be done due to pellet QC issues - There is something wrong.
I'm reading more and more issues like this all the time.
