JSB 30 Cal: 45 vs 50 grain

I just put in an order for tins of both. I’m interested in hearing preferences between the two and understanding instances where one can be better than the other.

I’m typically pesting at pretty short distances... is the 45 grain going to be better because I don’t need it to carry?

I dont own a .30, however I do see alot of people having better accuracy even at 100 yards with the 45gr if that helps.

My testing was at 75y, others will probably have more specific answers but in my gun (a cz barreled Vulcan), the 50gr pellets just don't work. Might come down to power and every barrel is different so still worth testing in your gun. I've seen the opposite so still worth testing in you gun.

My impact loves both.they seam to do great.hard for me to choose.for pestting the 50 gives more for.

Here's the flat out answer I got from Ken Hicks over at SPAW airguns. When I ordered my 30 cal. Impact. "I'm still getting the occasional flier with the 50's." The 50's are great for hunting but I wouldn't trust them on paper.

I did order one tin with my impact just to see.

The 44.15 gr is just a hair better in my FX Boss than the 50 gr at 50yds. Haven't tried it at 100 yet.

But for hunting I would go with the 50gr without hesitation.

Depends on your rifle / barrel. The 50's have worked better out of both Impacts that I had, but my Edgun R5 Long likes the 44.75's better. It's possible the choked LW barrels just shoot the lighter pellets better, IDK .. that's just the sum of my experiences and what I have heard from others online

So, when it comes to hunting, our primary consideration (besides accuracy) is the momentum transferred?

To clarify how I’m envisioning it:

If we use 50.15 grain at 750 fps (63 ft-lbs) as a basis, we’d get roughly 794 fps from the 44.75 grain at the same energy.

Comparing their momentums (momenta?... mass times velocity), the 50’s would have 37,613 grain-fps while the 45’s have 35,531.

So, that 12% increase in mass gives a 6% increase in momentum. So, assuming equal shot placement, the 50’s are “6%” more deadly....

Is that all (basically) correct?

Just a note, I shoot both out of my .30 rainstorm and found the 50 grain to be not as consistent in size nor weight as the 44’s. I weighed , sorted and sized all of mine and the 50’s tightened up.
