JSB 18.1 @ 875 fps + 1 Empty Kombucha Bottle = ?

Ah yes, basic mathematics once again! Takes me back to my youth. Back then I just couldn’t see how all that stuff they were trying to teach was so important. Well now that I’m all growed up and much more sophisticated, I can see why all that stuff is so important. Ha ha!

Really this was a spur of the moment thing. I had just drank the last of a bottle of kombucha and was just about to throw it away when I decided to see what a 18 grain pellet from my Streamline would do to the glass bottle.

I set the bottle up on a board spanning across the top of a garbage bin to catch the glass. The rifle was set up 25 yards away. I took a few shots at some cardboard to verify the POI. Then I took aim on the bottle and let it fly!

I had an idea of what I thought would happen. But what actually happened wasn’t what I expected.

What do you think would happen?

These pictures will give the answer.

So the pellet bounced off? Did you scratch the paper away where the pellet impacted?

Pellet didn't "bounce off", the energy from it pushed the bottle back. The hardness/weight ratio of bottle (harder but lighter) allowed the glass to (mostly) remain intact and dispersed the energy by getting pushed back. If the bottle had been restrained (such as placed against a wall) the result would not have been the same.

I had two ideas that I thought would happen...

1. That the bottle would shatter to pieces and I would have a mess to clean up

OR

2. That the pellet would pierce through the front and back with the rest of the glass staying mostly intact being supported by the paper label leaving a hole through it.

The most surprising thing to me was that it DIDN'T penetrate the glass. I knew it was thick glass but not so thick that the pellet wouldn't go through.

Next empty bottle I get I'll try what Rob (BTB) theorized and I'll support the bottle and see what happens there. This is all just for fun! I'll keep you posted...
