Seriously if I had any good sense I'd hang up going after those pesky ground squirrels. My general prime squirrel area has been a total blank for months. Today I went down to Rolands TAG paintball course in Hollister, loaded with squirrels. It was about an hour south of me so my pal Pete and I head out. Get there about 0900, contact Roland, he says have at it, I start walking in and see squirrel that immediately runs and hides, keep on walking, cool place lots of stuff to hide behind, and don't see a darn thing. Meet up with Roland, we plink some pans he's got hanging around and a big ass metal water tank , my friend brings my car around and on Rolands advice just start driving around. Net not one damn squirrel. I set up to get my guns re-sighted, in with a lovely wind, at 100 yards. Got my .25 Maverick doing ok then I jam in a few extra pellets, that ended that. Broke out the .22 Maverick Compact, finally get it on paper and within a few minutes of Squirrel, close enough, did I mention the wind? We decide to call it a day, go up say thanks and bye to Roland, head over to the Corbin MC seat factory, they have a cute Cafe and have a nice lunch and head on back home. Going it a go again, if for nothing else but a good sandwich and being with my fellow Vet buddy and perchance to get a darn squirrel.

It happens. 🤣 but since I'm in socal, I've drove 5 times further to see Roland. I think about June last year when it was a scorcher during the day. Seems best times is morning and evening while still cool and the wind is still low. There is so many holes in the ground. Its like a whack a mole game! I will have to come out and do it again.

Get yourself a predator call that has squirrel sounds in it, or use a mouth call.

Squirrel distress sound works well, as does territorial squirrel barks. I get set in location, glass for a minute or two until I have memorized the likely locations and the distances. Then play the sound for 30-60 seconds then glass again. It does Not have to be blasted loudly, but loud enough to hear. I have called squirrels from over 110 yards away.

most of the time they will pop half way out of the hole and stand up to look around. Once they have been shot at from a vehicle, they will be more wary of anyone in a vehicle.

Well, seeing as I have a hard enough time with English, sounding like a squirrel is pretty much out of the question. Any recommendations on the call device?

I thought I had gotten there early enough but apparently not so. Somehow in Hollister, cool and evening aren't two words that go together.

Last time I was there there was not that much vegetation because it had been pretty dry. This year because of all the rains (at least down in socal there was) did you find that there was a lot of vegetation and overgrowth?

And there was a wash or creek behind the property. I assume there is something flowing this year?

Weeds were kept down mostly some areas need some work, the creek had a little water in it. Roland let me drive my car back there but I was careful didn't want to start a grass fire with the catalytic converter. Had to pull off the road for the dirt trucks dumping dirt in the back for a RC car park he's putting in.

That's cool that he is expanding. And good that you are aware of your cat. Last time I went I got there about 5 and there was still light for like 3 hours I think it was cooler and everything was coming out. Even a couple skunks, but I did not fire on them as I did not want them spraying and getting Roland mad at me. I left to get a hotel room and came back later in the morning but I think I should have just stayed the night in the car. That long drive totally put me out for that night.

As much as I hate to say it, I guess I'll have to do a EARLY or late session, I only have a few good hours shooting before my eyesight goes and I'm tired, old guy syndrome. As an aside, I can't walk much, destroyed my left ankle in a MC accident so a lot of walking is out of the question, especially on rough terrain. Toss in Arthritic knees and hip and the fun times are coming. I'm going to my Horsemans Assoc. on Friday, if it's not pouring rain and lightning.

HogKiller, you sound like me except I'm too stupid to be aware of my issues until I'm there. I am ike a 5 year old kid stuck in a old man's body. And like the 5 year old it was supposed to rain this morning but I refused to believe it. Even though on the way to the range it didn't look that great.

I still drove an hour and a 1/2 to the range. Lucky for man it was clear.

I shot well past my eyes getting tired I only left because I was out of air. But just like the 5 year old I got grumpy and I need my nap. I still need to drive the hour and a 1/2 back home. 😫

I refuse to grow up even though my body says otherwise!

Well I started writing this and totally forgot about it. I'm home, tired and need to take a nap 😴 now.

One picture is worth $8,000 which is what this darn thing has cost..conservatively.
Maverick VP 600mm barrel, JSB Match Diabolo Exact King MKII Heavy .25 Cal, 33.95 Gr, 890fps, 120 yards. #2 reg 124bar, Transfer port on P, Huma Slug probe, #7 on the dial, Trigger Cam on gun but some fool forgot to turn it on so ... video is after the fact. If you look at the one of it on its side, on the top of the shoulder at the base of the neck. I watched for this little sucker for an hour and it finally popped up a few times. And of course a pic of the mighty hunter with his trophy. One shot of the distance of this, my friend Pete is over to the right of the entrance, at the end of the gray log. It was actually poking up above the log, It sort of sounded like I hit it but it just fell over, like you see in the first pic.
