It may be Coltri time, hand pump on backorder, nobody can fill large tanks

This is my first post.

I recently took the plunge into PCP after 40 years in the springer world, with a HW110, a HW44, (I love my HW springers and pistols) and a Hills MK4 hand pump from the sale on AOA.

Unfortunately, the hand pump is on backorder so now I have 2 useless PCP guns ;-(. This was the perfect excuse to research tanks and how to fill them locally.

I was thinking that I would get a tank such as a Great White, or similar, and get it filled locally, using the had pump for backup.

However, I have found that not one place I have called can definitively state that they can fill a large scuba sized tank to 4500PSI, and give me a price.

I thought this would be easy living in the Atlanta metro area. After all, Crosman lists many places that can do it, one of which a paintball range a mile away. They were very evasive on weather they could fill it at all, despite bragging that they had a huge compressor in their truck, they pointed to storage tanks and said that if they were low they could not do it. I said fine, I live a mile away, let's assume you can fill it, how much would it cost? They said they needed to see the tank, despite me telling them all of the specs (550 cu in volume, 60 minute, etc.), showing them pictures, etc. Finally, I think to get rid of me, they said it would cost at least $30, for even a top off from 3000-4500psi. Scuba places nearby say they cannot do it, will not do it, or do not return calls/email.

So, after reading this for for days, I have concluded that a Coltri or Daystate compressor is the way to go. I do not want to buy goods from China, particularly disposable compressors. Most of "name brand" compressors seem to be relabeled repackaged disposable compressors from China, with short warranties (e.g Benjamin recharge and similar), that are unable to fill tanks, and will likely be unrepairable or unsupported a few years down the road.

Next decision, is where to get a Daystate or equivalent Coltri. Daystate seems to only have one distributor in the US, and I wonder how easy service would be for the off-brand relabeled Coltri vs the versions from long existing US Coltri distributors. I am leary of the Daystate version becuase it only appears to be sold from AOA, and I fear itr could be abandoned, and not supported by AOA, (like my IZH MP-532 was). I am having trouble finding Coltri sales and service in metro Atlanta. I have only found 3 or 4 places in the US selling Coltri: Nuvair, and Americas Compressors, and some Dive Shops online. Although, I want 120V power, the most interesting deal I have found is a MCH6/SH gasoline for $2021 (not sure if links are allowed).

So to make a long story short, where can you buy Coltri Compressors, and is it actually possible to get the serviced locally?

I, like you, am extremely hesitant when investing into something of this nature. You've done your homework very well; I agree with everything you've said. While I cannot comment on the longevity of AOA I can say that I've never seen such an exceptionally packaged piece of equipment shipped. My LC-110 shipped from AOA prior tested, broke in, oil drained, and heavy boxed with high density foam. I was legitimately impressed because it was battle armored to survive even the most henious mishandling by a shipper.

As I understand it, the Daystate LC-110 is the Coltri MCH-3 EM Low Consumption without the Grade D breathable air filter because... PCP airguns aren't people and aside from blue the compressor was painted black :) So with respect to parts and service I am not concerned if AOA goes belly up. The motor plate on my LC-110 bears the Coltri name.

In case it helps, I am attaching the manual. It's not that Daystate, based on my research, invented some weird wonky 3 stage compressor it's that it's actually the Coltri MCH-3 EM LC and the motor plate/name plate bears the Coltri name. I see no need for the Grade D breathable air filter but that in itself is a separate topic :p

It turns out the vendor is in Spain, with pretty poor ratings. Shipping was only $190, but the vendor appears shady. Another strange thing to the total lack of agreement on specs, mainly max PSI. Even the Coltri website can't get it straight. All of the websites that have the Coltri that I can find, do not actually display prices, and even ones that have compare functionality, like Nuvair, have no information to compare. For example, there is a MCH4 on the Nuvair site, that has max PSI of 3260. The brochure agrees, but the instruction manual is for MCH6, which on some sites shows 330bar capacity.

Maybe the lack of prices is a good thing so that they can bargain on the phone. I will be calling Nuvair, and Americas compressors, the only two places in the US I can find.

Welcome to the world of importers, distributors, salesman, exclusivity, and influencers. Keep doing your homework. Coltri is hilarious, they can't even get the oil fill levels correct in the manual. You should see some of my former posts where the Coltri manual is exclusively conflicting on oil fill levels. Then couple in the YouTube influencer "How to" videos which are instructional videos on "How to do it wrong, with passion and influence, for likes"; LOL. Crank case nuts are hard to remove.

I wish you the best in this quest and watch out for the clandestine importers, distributors, and salesmen amost us forum members here -- especially in the "classifieds". :) :p

100% duty cycle, lol.

Take a look at the Alkin mini Magnum. It’s 220vac, but fills at 3.4 SCFM, which means a top off from 200 to 310 bar in about 6 to 7 minutes (6.8 liter volume) for a 45 minute SCBA tank. They are currently on sale for $2495. I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Alkin brand...

Airetex (Alkin) mini Magnum

Alkin cut ties with Airetex a few years ago.

I got into this thinking I could get a decent, repairable, compressor for under $1000. There is no way in this life that I am going to spend over 3K for a compressor.

Are these Alkin compressors actually superior to Coltri? If so why? I am not running a dive shop or a paintball field. I am one person with 2 PCP air guns that would like to fill one large tank occasionally. I do not care how long it takes as long as it is less than an hour. I definitely do not want 220v, and would consider gasoline powered before 220v.

$2k is about as high I will go, so Alkin, Bauer, etc are out of the question.

All i want is something that can fill a few tanks, and top them off a few times a month. A 100% duty cycle, if it even exists, is useless to me. All I care about duty cycle is that it can survive filling a large tank occasionally, and do so for many years, with low and/or simple maintenance with available parts, and the ability to be repaired if necessary.

So, back the the original question:

Where can you buy Coltri Compressors, and is it actually possible to get them serviced locally?

So far, on the purchase, I have found Nuvair in CA, and Americas Compressors in FL. For service, I have found nothing in metro Atlanta.

Alkin is 100% duty unlike the daystate at 20%.

I will have a Alkin W31 3.7 in a couple of weeks and will do a test. I have 4 471 cf 5000 psi tanks. I will fill all from 0 psi to 5000 psi with only stopping to change tanks.

"I have found nothing in metro Atlanta". And you probably won't. The dealers are pretty well known and can be searched-they are where they are. Bottom line is pretty simple-you can spend a little and get something that may work well but may be problematic. You can buy mid range and get something probably more reliable with more features. Or you can spend a lot and probably buy peace of mind with a dive quality compressor. Lots of probably in this-welcome to the compressor world.

I requested a quote, with shipping cost from MCH3 from Nuvair. I asked:

How do I get prices for you products? In particular I am looking for priced on MCH3 High Pressure Compressor, options, and shipping. I would be using this for personal SCBA tank charging for PCP air guns. I require 4500PSI. Power source is standard household 110v.

They replied:
Thank you for contacting Nuvair.
I would not suggest the mch 3 over our mch 6 but the price of the mch 3 is $2,500 dollars. We also include filtration and your choice of filling whip.

I love the vague reply.

They did not specify shipping or accessory cost as requested. Nor did they tell me the cost of the MCH6. If $2500 includes shipping and tax, then this is comparable to Daystate, because it includes a molecular filter for breathable air, that may or may not be beneficial to PCP use, that Daystate does not include. Separately, the filter costs around $500.

I will call them tomorrow and make them answer.

Edit. @dyotat100 is correct. I was wrong. The Airetex is not an Alkin. It appears to be a Chinese version of a Bauer Junior II. I ordered one from Bruce Dodson, we’ll see how it goes. Was thinking my Athlon Midas TAC scopes are made in China, and so is my iPhone. So I’m pretty sure they do have the capability to make quality products...
