Is tuning for power always the answer?

Now i know full well that much of the reason to tune up power on a recently acquired gun is to see it's potential. and i AM for it. but the question is does every gun you get have to be maxed out? lets see if i can explain my reasoning quickly so as not to bore the crap out of any readers. i have a 25 cal taipan long. THAT'S my power gun. and since i have different shooting needs. i try to fill every shooting niche that may arise. i prefer 25 cal so i don't have to buy multiple tins of different caliber pellets. also like the knock down power of 25 even at slower speeds. so i am getting a kral np-03 which i will convert to a pistol and set it's power to 25-30 FPE and leave it . also have a kral nemesis 25 cal with power ratings at 8-36 FPE. now this one i will try to bump up it's power yield to about 16-45 FPE range. the krals both have 5 power settings. NOW , i can try to ramp them up further , but why? both will fill a niche for my overall shooting needs. some times LESS is MORE. I'n not trying to criticize those that are pursuing max power to test possibilities , or slug potential. i understand. my question is , " is there no longer any desire for specialty lower power niche guns? sorry this went so long.

I keep my .25 ultimate sporter in the next-to-lowest power position and take out rats at 25 yards no problem. I'm not sure what the fpe is--probably 16-20? Anyway, plenty of firepower without the worry of ricochets. I also had my pro sport .22 tuned down to 10fpe and had similar results, though like you rangur1 I do love the .25 for getting the job done.

I get what your saying, but really, I think most of us do the same thing you are, just with different guns and sometimes different reasons? I personally craved the full limits of my Airguns at first, then a few years later I found myself turning a lot of them way down to find that harmony, accuracy and high shot count, slugs have taken a few of them back up a bit, but my Royal 400 22 cal or a good HW100 will quickly remind me of the pure fun of a good accurate, smooth and moderately tuned Airgun. So my answer to your question would be mostly, nope.

Cheers!

I've been de-tuning Shin Sung Careers for decades and (more recently) Sumatras, because neither will return a bell-curve otherwise. Bugs hell out of me that they lose velocity with every shot until I de-tune them to still-magnum power levels, rather than MAXI-BLASTER levels.

So de-tuned, I use Careers and Sumatras to routinely win long-range airgun competitions against the most "expensivest" PCPs out there.

RJ, thanks for the nod.

Thanks for posting them up Jason.

What can you say? Eye ball accurate is well....eyeball accurate. I prefer an air sipping mouse fart quiet 177 for 40 yards and under. Makes squirrels go night night quite handily.

What the hell are you guys getting on at? If it's not a 82 cal helium rig it's not an airgun.... Naw just kidding. The most shot gun I own is a lowly umarex fusion I didn't even tune. I just cleaned the barrel and started in plinking. At ten yards it all goes in less than a dime. I can't really think of a better gun to play around with than a 6 to 8 fpe 177 when your neighbors are lame.

LOL!! i think there are several members that can relate to that!

I guess I do things a little bit differently. Of the four pcps I now own I have tried to find the pellets they like best, tuned them for best accuracy and let the power fall where it may.

Edgun Rm5 .25 Jsb 25gr @910

Dreamlite .22 ported 600mm barrel, power plenum, 2mm hammer spacer, Jsb 25 gr JMR @905 (work in progress but showing great potential @ 100 yds)

Diana Outlaw .22 Jsb 18gr @920

DAR .22 AA 16gr @890 (also shoots 18gr Jsbs and Crosman 14gr quite well)

Who doesn't love more power? But that's not always the best thing as all the previous replies have stated. I love a high power gun that can blow up a watermelon - so I bought a Texan .45 SS CF with 700 fpe - but it costs a bunch in both slugs and air usage and it will get use in very specific situations. Not going to be using that to plink in the basement or garage. I'm also not a big fan of trying to get too much more out of a gun that it was designed for. A lot of times it turns the gun into a bucking beast that is no longer fun to shoot nor easy to shoot accurately. My most relaxing and enjoyable airgun to shoot in .22 only sends the JSB 14gr pellets at 665fps. Even 3 fpe CO2 pistols are fun and relaxing to plink with.

RJ, thanks for the nod.

Good shooting. What scope cam are you using?
