Is a TJ barrel any better than a LW barrel?

Would need more info. What caliber, projectile, bore sizes and twist rates as well as rifling type

Forgive my confusion but couldn't you assume all specs were the same for both brands and say which brand you prefer. I think he's looking for examples, personal experience or all the information someone is willing to share on the topic. Those of us who don't know want to learn all we can. Please enlighten us if you have the time.

Thanks

Ha. I just called Roy this morning at Mountain Air Custom Air guns out of Georgia. I'm looking for a barrel for my 22 Marauder. The choices are TJ or LW. The biggest difference he told me was the LW barrels are choked and you can not shoot slugs through them. Don't know if this fully answers your question but maybe helps. And like elh0102 said:

You could probably buy 10 from each, and have the same number of "keepers". In my experience, barrels from proven makers are consistently good. You might get a bad one, but unlikely.

Roy somewhat confirmed this. He said the TJ and LW shoot very well.

id say its going to come down to who finishes the barrel .. it takes alot of knowledge and skill to even center a barrel in a lathe to put a good crown on as an example .. sure joe shmo can do a lothar putting out bulk work as fast as he can, but it will be different than the specialist that puts in the extra time and effort ..

let me first say i have no experience with tj barrels but i currently have 2 lw barrels that i had made for my maverick. The first is a 177 rifled and choked barrel that shoots pellets very well and slugs ok , the second is a 177 poly with choke and shoots pellets ok and appears to shoot slugs very well but this was only the case after a light polish with jb bore paste. So this shows in my opinion that unless the person making the barrel actually shoots and tunes the barrel you have no idea what you’ll get untill you work with it.

I guess for me it really comes down to the use case. The specs of each barrel will not be the same, so that will play into my selection. But primarily starting with what projectile I want to shoot. Both are excellent when selected correctly.... But I can't recommend one over the other without knowing what he wants to use it for.

I've never purchased an airgun barrel other than prefit ones for fx impact. Can you specify the amount of freebore at TJ? I've noticed that some guns require extra force to chamber heavy slugs because they're engaging the rifling. I never felt any resistance using heavy slugs in an impact.

My question is a general one,if this helps it would be in .22 cal. and less than 14" long shooting pellets at less than 700fps. and more the 400fps with between 12-18 grains.

I do agree with what James says....why clutter the question with a bunch of other questions, you have explained why, which is good...

From what I gather it is more who builds the gun than on the barrel itself ...

LW is a huge barrel maker, not so with TJ ,maybe TJ would take more care in making the barrels ?

I hate to think of it as"Luck of the draw".umm, thinking about it I have gotten some great Crosman barrels and not so great.

All the answers help me and I do learn from everybody.

Hi I will give my input as I have tried literally hundreds of guns and barrels and Dizzum gave the best answer it dont matter which caliber or which brand it is or what twist rate and for what platform , The most important factor is who is finishing the barrel blanks as most all machinist check barrels for warpage and do some checks before squaring both ends and start process, this is how I do it and I am not a pro I bought a small lathe like 4 yrs ago , ,I have finished some my self and have bought alot finished and the machinist and his ability is important as sizing , threading on center crowning , polishing and cutting breech in , is what matters ,

Lastly I have some great shooting LW barrels with slugs so I have to say I have to disagree with this , also you can cut part of choke off or all of it some chokes are only 3/8 of inch . Hope this helps ,

also LW makes choked and unchoked and poly barrels in every caliber so I disagree with this also I own them in 22 and 25 cal for a few of my platforms .

If it were me Id go with LW blank or buy a finished barrel at airgun havean they do great work there

Both are very good. I have built several rifles around both brands, everyone with stellar results. There is one big difference though, the TJ barrels can be had in pretty much any length you might ever want, not so with LW. Further, the LW's come in kinda odd diameters that always need to be turned down, at least for my projects.

Just, and I mean only just, my $.02

Yes, Heavy -Impact; Though some of the sellers of these barrels also finish the barrels for your guns

You choose the make of barrel you want ,cal. the length, etc. and they machine it for your gun.

Also, some barrels are already machined to fit your gun, they are ready for you to install.

You have links to these places? I can handle all the machine work but I would like to have someone else cut the chamber.
