Iron Sights

That's correct.
You can easily visualise it yourself (for when you forget which side to turn the rear sight to when it's off): (it's a crazy long writeup for something that is done in a few seconds, but it takes a lot of words to describe, so bear with me here...)

Stick out both your hands in front of your face, the back hand with 2 fingers like a V (for victory) and the front hand with only the index finger up. Imagine your hands are a rifle and the V and index finger are the rear and frontsights on that gun.
Now move your head and both "sights" in unison to get an aligned sight picture on a target, something not to far away (just a few fee in front). (the easiest thing is to put 2 objects on a table, or use a small picture frame on the wall)

Say we go with the picture frame.
Here's what you do:

You line up your sights to "hit" the LEFT bottom frame.
Now you take the shot and imagine the pellet struck the RIGHTt bottom frame. >>>So ideally you would want the impact to move to the left <<< (like you say" in the direction I want to hit")

Keeping your index finger hand (front sight) still, move the rear V sight hand to the LEFT.

After you've done this, keep the "gun" (both hands) still and then ONLY move your head to line up the "sights" again. you should now see the sights point more or less at the right bottom corner of the picture frame where we imagined the pellet struck.

So this means the gun and sights are now lined up to where the point of impact is.

To "verify" what you've just done you will have to move "the gun" (both your hands) to the left to get the gun to point on the left bottom corner of the picture frame where you aimed for in the first place. See: you satrted off with the gun aiming to the left frame. the pellet struck right frame. you moved the rear sight to the left. Now you had to physically move the gun more to the left to alight the sights to the left frame.
