Initial scope adjustment

When I install a new scope and make the initial adjustment to zero it in on target. I find that it is hitting dead on for several shots until I put it away. When I come back the next day it’s not even close, I might have to do three or four clicks on the scope to bring it back in.

Is this normal?

Does it relax after the initial adjustmen of the scope the next day? Crow

The very first suspect that comes to mind when you say it's fine until you put it away is barrel movement. Are you leaning it against the end of the barrel when you put it away? If so, try laying it down so there is no force pushing on the barrel. If not, then give us more specifics, such as rifle model, scope model, and how you store it. Lots of great minds here ready to help, but we need more information.

Did you center the reticle before mounting? Most all mfgrs recomend not going more than one full turn of any turret from optical center. I have had this happen when a turret has to be turned numerous times to align the scope. Always be sure your turrets move in one direction such as counter clockwise, in other words go past then return to your setting so pressure on reticle is always in same direction. On higher dollar scopes this is less of an issue but on less expensive scopes it is a big issue from my experience anyway.

Yup, some guns do NOT like to be left leaning against a wall or in a corner, the barrel shifts. Next time you shot at a target, just experiment a little, tap your barrel to the left and shot a few pellets, then tap it right and shot some more, before you blame the scope.

You should have mention what gun, what mount or rings, and what scope, you never know which piece of info might help solve your problem

I need the minds (have a million questions) Most my scopes are Hawk air max. (two years ago I had a dozen Vision Kings cheap scopes to start off) I found them to always be adjusting, replaced with Air Max. I always take iron sights off. I now have several guns, all sweet, mostly Hw’s—Air Arms— Walther— Diana’s and a BSA.

This issue happens only on my initial scope adjustment where you might spin the dials a fair amount.

I do lean them against the wall. I’m about a week away from starting a gun room and I like to know what’s the best way to store a gun and display it?

You will find that those guns that shift are not bedded properly in the stock. Carefully bedding will stop that shift.
