Increasing power?

Just curious mostly but,

I've had an Air Arms S410E in .22 cal for many years, (8-10 not sure). I've always been happy with everything about it. I still am.

It has a slow leak so I've been on line looking for parts. While doing that I checked out the current AA offerings and I see that they now have the S510 in .25 caliber.

I got exited and nearly ordered one from PA, then discovered that the fpe is not really any different between the 2 sizes. That's disappointing.

I know the BC is better on the .25 pellets but it's not enough of a difference to justify a $1200 investment all by itself.

SO, my question is, IS there a way to get more power/velocity?

The .25 is rated in the mid 800's fps. It would be nice if it had the velocity of the .22.

I'm shooting JSB Exact Jumbo's that are about 16 gr. When I'm in the sweet spot they chony in the very high 900's and sometimes top 1000 for a few shots.

I know there are other Brands that already have more power, but I like the AA, and I really like the noise level in my .22. They did an excellent job designing the shroud/moderator in it. I think the other, more powerful guns would be very loud.

SO, are there parts available that would force more air to the pellet when I pull the trigger?

thx,

Jim

I don't know how, but there is usually always a way to get more power, but it usually results in giving up shot count. You could send it to a tuner to have it regulated and a power boost.

That was my first PCP (in a thumbhole walnut stock). It was great. I just hated working with the "sweet spot". Now I only buy regulated rifles

Someone will know the answer on here

I have an older AAs510 in .25 cal. It originally had about 38fpe. By enlarging the ports I managed to get a full 70fpe out of it. I had it shooting jsb 34g pellets at 960fps. I've since installed a huma regulator ( I understand they come regulated these days) set to 135b and a plenum volume of 35cc. It was then shooting in the 920s and I then reduced the hammer spring preload so it now shoots at a very accurate and efficient 900fps. Expanding the power adjusting valve to the 85% of bore like the rest of the ports wasn't easy. The toughest part however was increasing the hammer strike force now necessary to open the valve.

Steve at Pomona Airguns, in years past, performed/offered a power tune for the AA 410/510 line. I’m not sure that he still does but he would be good to speak to about this. https://www.pomona-airguns.com/shop/

I agree, the .25 AA is underpowered. One problem to overcome is that it has a smallish tube reservoir. With more power, as Tom said, your shots will decrease.

The FX Dreamline Classic version may be a good choice for you. It will be available soon and is in the price range of the AA. It’s also regulated and gets plenty of shots.

👆🏼That’s impressive. Good job 👏🏼

EdLina's post is very interesting, and seems to be in line with my thinking. That sounds like an awesome tune!

That would make buying the .25 in my opinion.

Plan B, would be to tweak my .22.

I usually don't shoot a lot. I only shoot targets to verify or adjust my POA. When I shoot at a live target, I need to know I will make my shots count. That said, I frequently only pump up to about 180 bar because I start out closer to my sweet spot, and I typically only need to shoot a few times. Shooting more that one clip would be a rare day for me when I'm hunting.

So, I'm curious if that tune made the gun much louder?

I'm a hobby machinist and can make my own parts. I wouldn't attempt a barrel but hammers and valves and such look pretty easy.

I thought I could reverse engineer my own valve and use a larger port, maybe increase the hammer force to increase the swell time and see what happens.

I don't need more fps in my .22 ,it's already fast enough, but it would be cool if I could go up on pellet weight and retain my speed...

:)

Thanks zx10wall. I used that gun to take 4th place at the 2017 EBR SC.

😲 whoa, even better!! That’s got to be satisfying to experience your modifications kicking tail in competition. I just looked up the results. My man, that AA and you are SOLID! Check the qualifying results ~ #2!!

I highly recommended modding a .22 to shoot the 25.39gr JSB .22 RD Monsters. Shot at 850 fps plus and it is a super good projectile with an awesome BC, similar to the .25 33.95 grainers. I’ve modded several guns now to shoot this pellet.

The "Pamona Power Tune" was to lower power only, by adding an adjuster screw.

Post u[p a picture eh? Thinking you have either the 16mm shroud or none at all? If so the valves are pretty hot from the factory and you might be looking at very little to increase power. There are different stmes at some point in the time line near your manufacturer date.

Seems PA still sells the old style fill valve:

If you really want more hop it up a bit in .22 and start trying all the newer ( and some better BC ) pellets available in .22.

Hey spysir,

I've been on the PA website several times looking for that connector and didn't see it. I was about to give up.

Now I feel kinda silly. I didn't see the parts tab to click on. Just accessories.

Anyway,

Got the snap connector on order. It doesn't come with a seal washer and I didn't see a 1/8 bsp seal washer in the AA parts section. I did find one in the Air Venturi section.

thx,

Jim

LDP,

I've seen a couple of places where they claim 40+ fpe for the .25 but I thought it was just typo's.

Example:

<span itemscope="" itemtype="S510" target="_blank">http://schema.org/Product">S510 Xtra FAC with ambidextrous poplar stock-- 850 fps @35 ft/lbs. (19.91 gr ammo)

<span itemscope="" itemtype="" target="_blank">http://schema.org/Product">S510E25SX35RWH [PY-2388-6257]Righthand walnut thumbhole stock- 850 fps @ 42 ft/lbs. (19.91gr)

These 2 listings are the same mechanics. Same ammo, same fps, but different fpe.

Must be a mistake?
