I have always been on the quest to find the most quiet pcp for my use. I actually enjoy shooting the low power stuff sub12 even in .177 and .22 heck I even have a .25 set at 22FPE. The problem is my backstop makes a whack every time. Not a problem when I'm pesting because its 1 shot at a critter but to sight in and practice its loud at 1am. I am currently using my tote with rubber mulch and a foam mat to place thr target on which works amazing for all calibers but its LOUD. I tried an old drop cloth last night and same thing. Has anyone found the ultimate quiet backstop material?

The smack of the pellet is always going to be loud. Sometimes louder than the shot. I’ve found slugs are much more quiet due to the ogive face. I’ve read that some have set their target with a surround on the top and sides coming in front of the target. Basically sound to the top and sides is muted but you’ll still get most noise back at you.

Yes, the old clothes are really quiet.
The loudest is the smack on the cardboard.
But that could be eliminated if the front side wasn't cardboard but chicken wire mesh or chainlink fence mesh.
It keeps the clothes together, but no smack sound.

The bull's-eyes to shoot at can be drawn on "sheets" of rubbery synthetic material — a craft store will probably have various options — the more soft-rubbery the quieter.

I used a dartboard with a paper plate successfully today to sight in a 15 fpe 177. I don't think hitting the same area too many times for too long would work out unless you doubled them up. It was an exceptionally quiet target (and gun).

I think he needs to be quieter than that.

I think the fillers are all good ideas, the container might be the noise issue.

A very large high fpe rated crossbow target works too, i will point blank discharge all my guns into one in my office at the shop when I load magazine fed stuff and store it on an empty chamber. It's filled with very very many compressed black trash bags I think.

Box with clothe is also what i use at home, i have 0 qualms shooting my ,177 FAC rifle repeatedly in my apartment, still the sound of hit in the box is the loudest.

FYI shots will drill a hole in cloth when hitting same place a lot, so do have a steel backing plate to make sure no pass through.

I want to do the rubber mulch thing, but i can find a company here that make it, but buy it here,,,,,,, nope i just can not find it.

Using Finnish made powder burner silencer and a Huma one.

If I really needed to quiet my target trap down I would experiment with making it deeper/longer. Sort of like a shroud.

Maybe use plexiglass so that light can get to the target. Make it removable to switch targets. Slip in on the front of your target box when you need quiet. Take if off when you don't. Maybe start with a 2-3 foot 'shroud' and see what that does. You could even go all-out and put some baffles or sound-deadening materials in there.

Just brainstorming here but I'm sure it would work plus it wouldn't cost much.

I also use rubber mulch but I was wondering if anyone has tried Kevlar material? I see it's available in a lot of different sizes on Amazon. 1680 Denier Ballistic Nylon 60" x 36" for $19.95.

I was building a backstop for my 68 caliber pellet gun and this fit the bill perfectly. Cut to just the right size it gives me an ample target area. Fastened to an inexpensive soccer net it makes the perfect setup. The attached picture is actually taken indoors, but when it's actually used, it is out in my backyard.
