In search of suggestions.

I have Beeman R7 that Ive owned since '96 and it has always been VERY accurate. Since then,I installed a Vortek kit with the moly piston seal...and it continued to be Very accurate. Last fall I was shooting and grabbed the R7 and at 25 yds it was suddenly grouping about 6 inches! It wasnt dropped, dry fired ect. Since then its been disassembled,re-lubed,examined,I reinstalled the stock piston seal, polished the bore w/JB Bore past, cleaned up the crown, double checked barrel pivot bolt tension, made sure to repeatedly check stock screws, replaced the breech seal, mounted 3 different scopes and re-installed the iron sights. I inspected the Vortek kit and cant see any problems. Piston rod is snug, trigger works very well and the barrel is mirror clean. What am I missing? Do I need to immerse it in Holy water or just throw it in the creek? Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions. I contemplated pulling my hair out but I already look like a Chia Pet that didn't come with enough seeds.
Mike.

I would throw this question on the GTA German board. I think you will have a better chance of getting an answered that could help. I’m new to springers and fully understand what has happened but unfortunately I don’t have an answer for you. good Luck if this was a pcp question I would check my scope and rings first then do a chrono.

G’day Mike sounds like you’re at where I and probably many have been before. My suggestions are as above and

  • Compare fpe from past if you can
  • shoot with iorn sights to make sure your three scopes are ok,
  • check that the operation of the jam spring is locking barrel in tightly
  • have you changed your hold
  • If all above is ok it could be that your original piston seal was faulty also
Good luck

John, I'm planning on chrony testing it today. A couple of the guys mentioned the barrel lock-up (Thank You!) and You are correct in that the barrel is in fact held in place via a staked in spring loaded ball style mechanism. Last night I added a couple drops of Ballistol to the balls perimeter with the barrel held vertical. I managed to depress the ball so the oil could get past it and migrate to the spring, ect. It may be my wishful thinking but perhaps it seemed to lock up marginally better.
Also, I Slowly pushed a pellet through the barrel. The 1st 2 inches of the breech area were snug. The middle section was loose,as in the cleaning rod fell in right to the choke under its own weight with a light push needed to get past the choke. What puzzles me is before Any of this, the rifle was Very accurate. I'm the only one who shoots it and all my airguns are Very well maintained. Like I said, I'm stumped.

Mike if you can move your barrel when cocked by lightly tapping down as if cocking your jam spring or ball spring needs replacing. I had that problem with one of my Trails, groups were opening up. If I tapped the barrel up after cocking and rested the rifle gently prior to taking the shot it grouped very well. Had a new spring made and cut it slightly longer than the original. Problem fixed. Also this might sound dumb but have you checked the parralex on your scope.
Good luck
Gary
