Not to nitpick (or nutpick if I was a squirrel), but is it even legal to shoot them this time of year? Just wondering??? In Wisconsin they are considered a game species, and many hunt them in fall for a wild game meal. I'm not aware of squirrels doing a lot of damage unless one decides to make a home in some building on your property.

It's a red squirrel, a pest in my state (MI) and can be taken all year with no daily bag limit. Several years ago they were everywhere in the woods I hunt, so bad that I got 14 in 45 minutes in about a half-square mile wooded area. The next day I went back and got 11 in 90 minutes. They are everywhere up here.

OK. They do make a lot of noise. If they can be taken all year with no limit, they are probably not considered a "resource" animal.

When I first hunted these woods, there wasn't a bird to be found in them. After pounding the squirrels hard for a few years, I noticed more and more birds in the woods. Now that's mostly what I notice, small birds. Red squirrels are detrimental to the small bird population. If they find their nests, say goodbye to the eggs and/or babies. That's primarily why I shoot them.

Hey Bob,
Just wondering, do you do anything with the red squirrels once you shoot them? I've heard of folks eating them...but there isn't a helluva lot of meat on them. Kinda like eating a chipmunk or filleting a smelt! I shoot the little jerks any chance I get and just leave them for "somebody else" to enjoy.

No, I don't eat them. Generally I'm not a hunter, I just shoot birds and critters that are classified as pests even though you need a hunting license to shoot them.

Those suckers are tiny compared to the monster red limb chickens we have here in Missouri. I’ve never seen a black one like you have up North. Now I have to go buy a Primos trigger stick. Thanks Bob!
