IMPACT 35 Honest Review

Got this a week ago after waiting for months in bronze. It's getting returned. I have 700 rounds through this in a week and while I don't expect a 35 to be MOA at 100, I expect the groups to better after 700 Shots than what they are and there have been too many "what the $#$$%" shots where the pellet isn't even close to the target to justify this gun and the price. The first day I shot it, things were pretty decent and I was excited. Day two and three with the same settings the grouping was abysmal. Weather conditions all three days were the same. it's not like day one was no wind and day 3 was 30 MPH. Since then, I have tinkered and it's still god awful. Frankly, it's no better than the two Hattsan 35's I owned and sold because I thought the accuracy was very subpar on those.

Observations.

1. Not applicable to me since I live in the country but it's not even close to back yard friendly if you live in town even with a after market moderator on it. (not sure any of us expect a 35 to be back yard friendly but I mention only because some people might be curious) If the rapport doesn't get the cops called on you the target it hits will be loud enough that the impact will.

2. Not sure if I have a defect somewhere or not, but unlike my other impacts the first one or two shots on this are always low as heck which pretty much defeats the purpose if you want to grab this and dispatch a coon or some other pest in your yard... firing two empty shots to then be at zero and asking the aforementioned pest to hold still isn't acceptable . Again, maybe I have a defect somewhere which further exacerbates my disappointment in this unit.

3. I Have fiddled with about every power wheel setting you can and it just doesn't group worth a hoot. I should also mention that this is the only gun I have ever seen where targets a foot to the left or right of center on a shooting board are all over the place and you can move back to center and it's back to zero. This isn't scope cant either. I have mounted dozens of scopes on centerfire rifles, rimfire rifles, and air guns, and I use a bubble level and I have never seen a gun of any kind do this. I can put targets right down the middle of a huge piece of plywood and the grouping is as good as I think this gun will get (subpar) at best 2 or 3 inches. Take cracks on the ones far left and right sometimes the pellet doesn't even hit the 6 inch target!!

4. After a week of this and frustration I am really trying to discern why FX would release a gun that performs this poorly. It's against their MO. My other impacts are the most accurate guns of any variety I own. I love them!! The few owners of this gun I have chatted with on a FB group are also expressing poor performance and results so I don't think I just got a lemon. One of the things I think that is telling to me, is that all the big "youtuber personalities" made one video with their 35's months ago and not a peep since. I have to believe that's not coincidence. I almost wonder if the reason there are so few shot placement and accuracy videos on this gun is because the gun simply won't do it and can't do it and FX doesn't want all these pre-orders cancelled with tons of videos showing 3 and 4 inch groups at 100??? I don't know; maybe that's conspiracy theory talk but one would expect more video content of this gun than there is considering all the hype when it was announced.

I didn't expect a 35 to be sub moa or even MOA at 100 but 3 inches with at least one shot in every mag sometimes 3 flying 7 inches from the 6 shots before it? And that happens every mag. Once in a while I can attribute that to a bad pellet or me as the shooter 2 or 3 out of every 18 something is going on there.

2,000 for a gun that performs this poorly all while the dealer got my money for "free" for months is highly frustrating and disappointing. I have a sneaking suspicion that until FX can make this do what their other impacts do and be tack drivers (if that's possible in this big of caliber) that this gun may in fact be discontinued before the dust settles. I don't think a lot of people are going to settle for how this gun performs once they have it and run 500 rounds through it. I see a lot of these going back to dealers. For what it's worth.

I would check to see that the barrel nut is tight. In fact it's shooting not quite as perfect as you expect anyway take the liner out try removing the harmonic tuning O-Rings and reinstall liner and be sure the barrel nut is secure and try shoot again.

You can try and just unscrew the bottle when not in use to avoid that suspected reg creep so you don't have to waste your first up to 4th shot blank firing it just to get it settled.

Probably best to store with the bottle pressure equal to the reg pressure left screwed onto the stored gun though and just fill it right before you go shooting.

That's a shame, appreciate the honest review.

Is that barrel system same as in every other caliber? My personal opinion is that they have simply taken that platform too far and I feel like gun designed for 22cal surely can work decent in 177 and 25 where 30is stretch but 35 just insanity. I generally think barrel system, frame and bolt are not robust enough for 35cal + the fact its lacking power to make that cal usable except if you are mortar man. Its nice to see some honest reviews tho since alot ppl here tend to go nuts everytime someone says something negative about their swedish baby and yes I have spend hours shooting with Impact in 22,25 and 30cal and I simply hate that barrel system.

Yeah the .30 is excellent, shoots pellets as good as the old smooth twist and deadly with slugs both from the slug liner.

You have PP on yours? How big 30cal slugs you can shoot from 30cal with 950+fps?

I've tried up to the 62gr and can get those to 1000fps, I have a hybrid setup with the polish plenum, hammer weight, bigger valve seat but the rest the old style.

Definitely not lacking for power or accuracy.

Worst case scenario if it's the 35 caliber FX barrel that don't shoot well in general I would request a caliber swap for 30 caliber.

I know for sure FX got the 30 caliber right on the money at least my Bobcats and Bosses are all tack drivers in 30 caliber.

If I were you and paid 2000+ and was told just get the 30 cal barrel and your are good, I would be pissed. If that's the case, you should've just bought a used .30 bobcat for less then 1000. I would return the gun for a refund but that's just me. If you have to pay for return shipping, that's sucks and a slap in the face.

Last time I shot 30cal impact it was before polish plenum or pp and it was peaking out 912fps with 44gr jsb so atleast power side is fixed then for 30. I still feel 150fpe at 35 is too little.

Fair enough but the .30 even with the PP is advertised at 80ish fpe. I doubt 150 is the max.

It took an act of God to get my .177 Wildcat to shoot decently. I have covered it in my threads, so I will not do it here.

I will say, that from the beginning, I knew the gun was capable of shooting well. The issue was how to & why it was doing that. At the end of the day, I still feel that the only tinkering you ought to have to do to such a costly gun is clean the barrel and sight in the scope.

@jiikuu These problems may be due to the barrel system, but aren’t exclusive to the bigger bores. My .177 was a total PITA to tame. Most folk report good results from .22, .25, & my buddy has a .30 that shoots very well.

I noticed the 44gr JSBs groups OPENNED UP a little in accuracy past 900fps so I backed down to 880-890 even 860 was really accurate.

At 50 yards, my .30 Impact is stacking in the same hole at 900 FPS even. It seems to be real happy from 880ish up to about 905 or 910 then it starts to open up into a cloverleaf. I have not tried going up into the mid 900s with pellets in it.

I seriously doubt that the .35 Impact is lacking in power, at least the current spec MK ll version. My .30 is current spec with Power Plenum, bigger valve seat, short preload adjuster etc. , and it is sitting at 105 bar with a whole bunch of hammer preload left. Considering that the air pressure is going to exert more energy on a .35 pellet than a .30, I think that the .35 would make some pretty respectable numbers.

Probably dependent on which liner and twist rate. I've have them shoot excellent at 950 even. Original smooth twist yeah I'd agree.
