I'm officially hooked. Now what?

New member here and happy to be apart of the page. I've been a shooter since I was child like many of you and through the years I kept my passion with shooting by hunting, gunsmithing, and precision rifle shooting. A few months ago I thought I'd give airguns a try since I could get indoor trigger time during the winter. I bought a Gamo .177 maximm and became hooked. I have been experimenting with different pellets, trying different scopes, and shooting almost every day since December. I now enjoy shooting my air rifle more than I do my precision rifles.

I plan on upgrading my rifle eventually to something in 22 or 25 cal so I can deal with a few pesky raccoons destroying my deer feeders. I enjoy the break barrel actions because of the low maintenance and simplicity.

The reason I joined other than sharing my passion with others who enjoy it too is I was wondering what type of competitions were out there for these rifles. I know about the Olympic style which seems to be very costly to obtain a competition ready rifle, but are there other kinds for people who want to spend less than $1k on an airgun?

welcome aboard, lots to choose from they have multiple competitions from 25 meter to 100yard bench rest along with field target and big bore. They have some great spring piston rifles (generally) more suited for 50 yards and under. The longer range out door competitions are dominated by the PCPs. Its definitely less expensive to get started with springer but sooner or later if your like most of us addicts you will end up with a PCP or 2. Once again Welcome aboard.

You can spend way less than 1K on an airgun if you go the springer route. You can also spend less than 1K on a PCP, if you know what you’re looking at and are willing to buy used. For instance in the classifieds here, there is a recent posting by a fellow selling a quality year and half old .25 PCP for $850. A gun that cost at least $1400 when new. That is but one example. You still have to add your fill source of choice, which definitely adds to the costs. You state you’ve been shooting for years and do some gun smithing so you are knowledgeable. Read up do a lot of research, decide what you want, then jump right on in, the waters fine.

Hunter field target springer class is certainly within your budget. A TX200 or HW97 for $600 plus a $300 scope will get you started. Not everyone who shows up at the regional/local events has a $3000+ rig. Clubs in most states.

Thanks I will definitely look into those asap. Maybe one day I will consider spending $3k+. Really just looking to get started for now.

Run-run very fast!!!

Seriously though-welcome!

I am what you might call "economically challenged" and haven't spent more than $500 on a gun yet (though I feel myself falling). Take a good look at the Weirauch springers. If you love your your Gamo you won't believe the quality of the HW guns. AOA has great prices-in fact I can get the same model gun today (HW 95 /Beeman R9) I bought ten years ago for less than I paid back then!

Shoot safely and have fun!
