Why didn't they simply cut the tire instead of the antlers?
I think someone wanted those antlers for their trophy wall. (chuckle)

They said they couldn’t remove the tire because of the steel belts, they probably didn’t have the proper tools. But I do agree that rack is not going in the dumpster.

The antlers will grow back next year. The little bull won't be able to fight for breeding rights (not that he would score a harem with that puny headgear).
Like catching a smaller fish....throw it back to grow larger and catch them again later.

Perhaps, but even I have clippers/nippers that will cut through a car tire, steel belts and all. Oh well, maybe they simply didn't have the tools.

And yes, I have done it once. Never have cut off Elk antlers though. (smile)

I would have brought my "little" battery powered grinder with a cutting disk, and had that tire off the animal in a minute or two.
With the animal sporting his antlers clearly something was needed to cut the tire, so i will say ill prepared but still they got the job done just in typical gooberment fashion.

They did the right thing by removing the antlers because running a cut-off wheel, 13,000 rpm, on a tranquilized elk would be insanity. When those wheels shatter it's DANGEROUS.
I've seen one shatter and embed in the drywall ceiling of my garage AND stick into a fellow welder's hood. Scary stuff.
Yes, a cut-off wheel will cut through rubber, wood and just about anything.
