N/A I think we need a new caliber among .25 and .30 for hunting and Target shooting

Mold selection to small..Not enough power to take advantage of the high BC bullet . Best bullets will be from 135gr n up . There is a 100gr BT but no reports about how it has worked.. 257 has the best mold selection n now tj has 1-8 n 1-9 twist to go with the 90gr to 100gr pils .
A custom gun would have a custom mold I would assume. I don't see a point going as large as 284 or 30 personally, but it doesn't mean my take is good. 284 is just one of my pet pb bores. 110 fbhp have worked out of a 7rm but why bother... I love the pursuit of something just to see if we can, but even this I'm not fired up about. I'd rather see more optimization of the currently popular bore size projectiles in air rifles.

How many times in the pb world have we been served up something new that is almost an analog of something old.

Well is not that it hasn't been done..TJ has a 284 barrel 1-14 that a YouTube guy used in his custom .40 Badger it work great with 135 gr Lee mold - there is a few of. 284 aviable at eBay from time to time.. the Texan or the long AEA Rifle would be a candidate for a barrel swap.. another guy here compete with a armada in .284 at ARMAC now he is assembling a 308 in the same gun .. really hard to get custom molds the only one that could make custom one of goes only from 284 n up not .22 no 25 .. the other 2 custom mold maker will only do them if they're is a batch of 10 people or more.. i though about 6mm but in my case I already have almost every shootable mold in 224 up to 64gr and the same for 257 including a difficult to find 98gr RBT from B&M .. there are a few 6mm mold aviable.. but a custom barrel will be needed..

AirForce, Bulldog,.....

Those guns mentioned as "best candidates".... — are visually displeasing to my eyes, very displeasing.... 😵‍💫

ABut a .257 shaped like a Uragan 2, Wildcat BT, Prophet, etc. — that would get me to sell some guns in a hurry to finance my order! 😊

Matthias
I imagine that with the right knowledge and machines, the .45 uragan could be rebarel to .257 or 308 .. but sadly not to many people aviable to do such work..

25 is about right for convenience sake, or just go from there to 30 cal.

So far I haven't read about great success with really long slugs possibly due to barrel friction, maybe leading of the bore?? and mostly sub 3000 psi to push them.

Also for convenience sake it'd be awesome to use those 300BO 240gr lead bullets but it doesn't seem that would work as well as I'd like or hope. Man you'd need a 6 twist barrel which would make it even harder to launch these at airgun pressures.
Guns made for said caliber that would accept a super long slug. Maybe a 4-6 s nose shape with a rebated boat tail. Something not limited to short chunky slugs and have an emphasis on max bc
That was what I thought as well but apparently the downsides aren't worth it.

It's a pain but the custom mold thing isn't insurmountable, I cast zero for airguns but was casting a bunch of esoteric stuff for pb years back. It's attainable. Or you gotta make your own. I suppose my view is tainted by being slightly attached to aerospace machining and having a lathe myself. No I've never made molds... yet but I'm pondering it. I feel your pain to a degree, being a contrarian I married myself to 284 when 6 and 6.5 became the trend. Honestly I'm astonished it didn't bleed over to elr airgun.

Contrarian comedy opinion. Vld 20 cal slugs 😂

You won't find a Uragan or Wildcat that can even come close to being the hunter as the .308 Texan is. I will always pick function over looks. Do you want a show car that you push on and off a trailer or do you want one you can drive?

Rob,

of course your're right — in a pinch it's function over form! 😃

However....
PCP makers the world over have shown us how pretty they can make our PCPs.
So, before I spend my pretty penny (or two), I'd like something that doesn't just work well — but looks well!

➊ With today's technology of autocad, computer design, fully automatic CNC, and other tremendously helpful tech, there is really no reason to let the engineers work alone without consulting with industrial designers and aesthetics experts.

➋ And even less excuse to do that considering how much money these toys are sold for...! 😆

🔸 Someone very nice loaned me a very nice car as my daily driver while on a long business trip.
Every time I look out the window my heart skips when seeing it.
I want that same emotion when I look at a PCP I spent a 4-digit amount on.... 😃

6.5mm (0.264). Since I got my first 6.5X55, I've loved that cal...which is why I went with .25cal.

I wonder if PCP power levels would support faster twist rates...like 1:10...
My modified Texan .308 would do very well; here are some numbers. . With a slug length of 0.801 inches, a weight of 150 grains, and a velocity of 990 fps, Texan .308 paired with a 1:10 twist barrel is sitting in a very stable zone. likely in the SG 1.6–1.8 range—right in the sweet spot for consistent flight and minimal yaw. At 990fps it is high enough to fully stabilize that long slug without stressing the lead or deforming the base. In short: my setup is not just functional—it’s optimized. Thank you for bringing that up, I have never given it a thought. makes me want a 1:10😊

Can Pretty and Functional Coexist?

Yes, but compromises sneak in:

  • Sleek, compact rifles (like the Wildcat or Edgun Leshiy) look amazing and feel great—but you trade off power, shot count, or tuning access.
  • Some designer PCPs go for carbon fiber, intricate machining, exotic stocks… but they’re not hauling 150gr slugs at 990 fps like my Texan is.
So while an engineer could sculpt a sexier Texan, odds are it would either be heavier, weaker, less stable, or a nightmare to service. The current look? It’s what happens when engineers say: “You want performance? Buckle up—we’re building a cannon.”
