HW/Weihrauch I LOVE my HW30!

I took out my HW30 .177 this evening for a little target work off the bench. I have a newbie on the hook and he’s just about ready to take the plunge into airgunning. He was curious what kind of accuracy to expect so I told him I’d shoot a few groups and photograph them. The HW30s is awesome because it really makes me look like I know what I’m doing😂. I set up some targets at 25 yards and shot groups. I shot 18 different 5 shot groups using 5 different pellets and all but one of those 18 groups will easily fit under a dime.. I used H&N FTT 4.50, H&N Finale Match Heavy 4.50, H&N Excite Econ II, JSB 10.34 and some JSB Exact 8.44 4.52. I shot off of sandbags and used a Hawke Airmax 4-12X40 scope. Here are some of those targets from this evening.

Nice groups! Everyone should have an HW30. I never thought an eight foot pound rifle would be so much fun to shoot. A true all day shooter.

I shoot mine at fifty-five yards and sometimes out to eighty if the wind cooperates. Mostly cans and spinners. Much more fun than paper. String up some soup cans and turn him loose. He will be hooked in less than 10 shots.

Edit: The wind cooperated and let me get a five shot group at eighty yards. Four shots in the middle and one flyer in the upper left. Not bad for an eight foot pound rifle.

That is a beautiful stock. Also some very nice shooting at 80 yards with an HW30. What pellet does your rifle prefer?

I have 4 HW30’s and R7’s, but….
Just thinking. This was likely the sentiment towards the BSA Light Patterns over a century ago. The L prefix designated Ladies at first but soon referred to as Light because it is a smaller, lighter version that could be loved by everybody.
Lighter and handy at 39 1/2"
Introduced in 1907
The bottom one is 1908

What surprised me most was how well the wadcutters performed at 25 yards. I guess I just assumed they were best at 10 meters. I used the H&N Finale Match Heavy and the H&N Excite Econ II for the first time in the HW30; mostly as an after thought. Turns out they both outshot all the other pellets. I haven’t measured those groups yet but they are very small for a springer at 25 yards.

The value of an airgun is in its entertainment value, and the HW30 scores big IMO. 😁
.20 cal @ 75 yards, H&N FTTs.
Nice to see a shooting video, even of just one shot, done with the .20 cal HW30. There are lots of great posts and videos about the HW30 in .177, yet little about the .20. Vested interest: I ordered one.

Do you have any special observations or advice about it? I have a good stash of FTT and Diabolos, expecting to shoot mostly FTT with the HW30. (The Diabolos will probably be mostly for the Blue Streak even though it does well with FTT also.)

My HW30 likes the JSB RS 7.3's and the H&N Terminator 7.25's the most. JSB 8.4's and H&N FTT 8.64's in a pinch.
The Terminators were surprisingly good in my P3 and Daisy 880. And they must be the cleanest pellets I've ever bought. After loading them, there's barely any lead residue visible on my fingers.

Yes, the main challenge of long range (75-yards) shooting with the HW30 .20 cal, is dealing with the trajectory. When zeroed for 30 yards it is about thirty inches low at 75. My scope doesn't have that kind of range. So to get it done I used the scopes bottom mil dot. Then did some testing to dial in my elevation using the scopes zoom. I found that at about 4.5 X the bottom mil dots was zeroed for elevation.
Then my next challenge was overcoming scope cant. You get a real clear understanding of the importance of cant when you look up at the X and know that pellet is going to fall from there all the way down to your aim point.
The .20cal pellets hit alot harder than .177s. The HW30 can flip crazy eight paddles at 75y, but my Beeman Webly Vulcan .177 can't it only wiggles them, and it's a stronger gun than the HW30 .177.

Here is the whole video if you interested.

Thanks 👍
