I hate wood stocks !!!

Yes they are beautiful, but to keep them that way one must use caution. I have yet to see a wood stock hold up to hunting here in the N.W. The west side for example usually pouring down rain, brush so thick you have to get on your belly & do the army low crawl thru coyote trails at the same time praying that you do not meet up with the user. Oh forgot to mention the devils cane & salmon berry, yes just love those thorns ! Now the east side I love it, boulders, rocks, pumice, sage brush, the dead stuff should be called iron wood not to mention ponderosa pine, just love those slick needles been on my but a few times. But on the other hand I just finished up my Sheridan stock. Completely refinished it, mind you it took hours. So was installing the roll pins on the forward stock section, yes you got it. I missed the pin & hit the freaking stock with the hammer yaaah (LOL). So has anyone had luck using a wet rag with a iron to steam out a dent or scratch ? I new I should have waited for my wifes help because of my tremmors but she was ------- ---- shopping ! & you got it I'm not a road hunter. any suggestions would be helpful at this point . Darell

I lived up there 20 years ago and yes the Blackberry's are the thickest I have ever seen and yes it is always raining. Lived in Puyallup, Everett and outside Marysville on the reservation / waterfront. What I would not trade for some rain now. 4 tenths of an inch in the last 6 months. Here in drought stricken Texas Wood stocks dry out and crack and I would gladly trade many mesquites for a few Blackberry brambles and a LOT of rain! ;)

The east side has been pretty wet lately. Oh and windy as windy can be!!! I dont care for wood stocks either. Or bare or blued metal. All my guns, get the rattle can. When long distance backpacking, or just in country for weeks who wants to hold on to precious? Synthetic, and painted metal is the way to go.
I lived in Seattle for years, great micro brews and bike friendly. Fishing was pretty good. Loved the rain.

T3PRanch Thurmond wish I could ship you up all the rain for free, as for the mesquites I have never seen them so I looked them up. They remind me of our hawthorn trees around here. I found out the hard way (lol) no you can keep the mesquites. I forgot about the blackberries but they do have a purpose (blackberry PIE) one of my favorites. You must have pretty deep wells mine is at 185 ft. 35+gals.

hawkeye69 Thanks for the idea just got some from PA last month for my scopes.

yeagger It works see following thread

Guod123 Thanks Doug for the phone call & your tips, the dent is completely gone. It was nice to here from you again & will keep in touch. When I get the build done (the stock & gun) that I bought from you, I'll send you some pictures & the next time you post you get a plus from me. Thanks so much

Scrufhunter After reviewing I left you out sorry. Most of my pb's are wood except for my old nylon 66 but at this stage of the game & for this purpose I'll stick with the harder stuff. I live just north of Vancouver & it is getting over crowded & for bike friendly I'll leave that one alone (LOL). Now for the rain - You must be a young buck because this old fart of a fossil feels like he's rusting. Have a nice day Darell

UPDATE After getting a few tips from Doug aka guod123 the dent disappeared. I put some water on the dent - covered with a thin flannel shirt then applied steam. It took 3 times during the process ( completely gone ) now just buff with some fine steel wool because the area will have some high grain (roughness) them apply wax. It did not affect the . color of the stain. As long as the grain has not been broken you should be good to go. My dent was 1/4 by 3/8 wide x 1/6 to 3/32 deep. I used the wifes Rowenta ultrasteam which in fact covered a larger area, if using a iron you might need to be a little more careful. happy camper now !!
