HW98 .20 Cal ~~ As Received

I ordered a TX200HC. The vendor told me when I ordered it there would be a 3 month wait and I was amenable to that. When I checked on it two months later they told me that AA had not even gotten back to them with a date on when the rifle would be available. It was a LH model and that may have complicated things. I thought about it and finally tossed in that towel and opted for an HW98 in .20. The rifle arrived today. I had already purchased a Crimson Trace 4x20x50 Series III for the TX200 I had on order so when the HW98 came in today I mounted that on it.

This rifle is going to be a fine shooter. I always loved the Rekord trigger since I had one on my R10, long since gone. This trigger did not disappoint although I could feel a hint of roughness just before it broke like glass. Probably something that a drop of graphite would fix. At this point I have done nothing but take the rifle out of the box and mount the optic temporarily so that I can get a feel for how much I am going to need to do to get the rings lined up. I have not oiled the rifle. I have not cleaned the barrel. I have done absolutely nothing to the rifle but hang the optic. I didn't even check the first screw for tightness ... nothing.

It looks like this:

Just your typical HW98.

I got the bean bags and walked out to the picnic table to see how far off my mounts were. I dialed it down to 15 yards and shot at a stick in the grass. The shot fell pretty close so I shot a couple more. The second shot broke the stick and the third I got a good read. The POI was about 1.5 mils high and 1 mil left at 15 yards. So I hung a target on the 25 yard stop.

I ordered five tins of JSB Exacts from AoA when I ordered the rifle and they came in with it. I shot thirty more shots (pellets as is from the tin) starting in the lower right, across the bottom and then upper right across the top. Here they are:

I shot ten shots over the chronograph. 697 fps for about 14.75 fpe with an SD of about 3.5 fps. You get what you pay for when you buy a Weirauch. This rifle cleaned up, broke in and shooting sized/sorted pellets will probably shoot under a dime at 50 yards on a calm day. Today the wind was from 10 o'clock and variable at about 6 to 12 mph. You can see the wind drift in the groups as I did not try to hold off for wind. Put another way the true measure of those groups is how tall they are, not how wide they are.

Regarding the optic. I adjusted up 1.5 mils and right half a mil after the lower right group, then up a half and right a half after the lower center group, and finally up one tenth of a mil and left a tenth after the lower left group. I didn't adjust the optic again. Good glass. Clicks were very positive and a bit too easy to make for my taste but this optic was one of the best buys I've ever made. Thanks to Odoyle on that.

The .20 98/R11 can do quite well out to 50 yards and a bit beyond beyond. Target below is @ 55 yards and other than the one shot I pulled (I don't usually say flier) the 4 other shots measure .352''. Mine is not a true 98, it's really a modified R9 that I turned into an R11. Piston is glided and a tuned kit added as well, it shoots up to 16fpe pending pellet. I can easily cock it with one finger, mine seems to like the JSB 13.73 gr pellets.

The first HW98 I got was the .20 and that led to getting the .25 followed by the .177.

All three HW98s of mine in .177, .20, .25 are the best of any break barrel bar none.

The HW98 will take the caliber of your choice to be match grade at any yardage available.

Believe it or not my favorite HW98 is the .177.

I have that rifle set up for pinpoint things that don't require a lot of lead getting splatted everywhere!

I love the HW98 .177 more than the .20 in my life.

The .20 is restricted to the HW80 (Left Hand Stock) and HW98 and D54.

The D54 cost the most and it is better than these HW98s for those who can handle the D48 on wheels. In .20 the D54 comes to life beyond our favorite break barrels like the HW98 that surpasses all break barrels.

The sidelever Air King by Diana is a different set up and really requires an air gun smith to use THAT powerhouse with the In Line Barrel (Fixed) to oppose the "break barrel" HW98s.

An R1 or HW80 lacks the precision of an HW98 in any caliber and the HW98 lacks only a few fps compared to the vaunted R1 or HW80 in any caliber.

The idea is to get the most accuracy and power downrange beyond the limited usual pellet rifles in CO2 or pneumatic (stroke pumps up to 12 or so per shot!). The HW98 in any caliber will deliver.

So as .20 is received in HW98 it should be KEPT and never let go. Never let go of a 98 before letting go of R1s and HW80s. The HW98 is the END of it!

The 98/95 is well underpowered for the .25 especially beyond 40 yards by numerous reviews and I certainly agree. The R1/80 is way more than a few fps ahead of the 98, even more so if either or both are tuned. It would be so easy to let a 98/R11 go because they are still being made and easily replaced. The R1 is now discontinued and far more desirable by many, more collectible and far more valuable. Especially considering some of the less common stocks and variants made the R1/80 would be by far the one keep by many/most. As far as the end of it, maybe try a few Theoben's, Diana recoiless, HW55's and see after that... Now if you were to mention these are opinions that would be far more reasonable that stating some things as facts or definitive.

Exactly. I would buy an R1 in excellent condition right now in 22cal or 20cal. I had an HW98 once. I did like the adjustable stock.

Great looking rifle OP! I was considering buying an HW50S, in .177....now I think I will order it. I have never had one of these Weihrauch rifles, and am thinking this is the way to go for my next one.

I just bought one of those for my wife. I think that rifle will be perfect for her. She wants something fun to shoot which will double as a pest killer in the garden and orchard.

Sorry, this is way off topic, but have both the R1 and R9 gold finger in .20, and a small supply of various pellets from Beeman, etc. I read somewhere that the compression tube port which lines up with the breech is the same diameter (I have nothing to compare) for both .20 and .22 - if that's true I'm considering ordering an HW80 .22 barrel in the future for the R1 just for variety, but I don't know if they are compatible? I would have to buy a few parts to complete the barrel and make it, for lack of a better term, "swapable" with original .20 Barrel.

The underpowered is as I said by several reviewers and said I agreed. magic, no such thing... FACTS.

Collectible and valuable is a statement of fact when you look at recent sales not any opinion involved... FACTS.

I don't INVEST in airguns I collect them, fact is my collection IS worth multiples of what I paid for them so no denying or OPINON there either, FACTS.

I didn't offer any real opinion I again offer facts and agreed with some reviews...

If I was looking for a fight which I'm not it would never be online it would face to face, he offered his OPINIONS I offered facts and in fact they were even agreed to at least in part by a following comment. At no point did I "piss on your rifle" in fact I own 3 R11's but when using the comparisons as the other member did to an R1/80 I am correct on all counts again not opinion, fact. If you were to read you'd see all this quite clearly. Perhaps it is you are looking for fight...

Why is it OK the other poster offered all his OPINIONS and that's OK but when I offer facts it's not???

I believe they are. I have switched barrels several times over the years on the HW80 and HW95 platform with no problem. I was getting ready to call AOA to see if they carry extra barrels for the HW95. In the past I always ordered extra barrels from Specialty Shooting Sports in Canada but they don't carry HW anymore.

Thanks for the reply, and I apologize for the, "highjack"...PA has the barrel on pre-order and it's much less expensive than UK prices without shipping which is very encouraging. I guess the lever breech seal, etc. will have to be sourced as well, but still pretty economical: https://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/BN_5_5_barrel_for_R1_HW80/7150

No problem I am sorry that I did not manage to fix that post before you read it. I gave it a shot but I guess you were on line when I replied.

I wrote quite a piece explaining to you the difference between an opinion Define Opinion and a fact Define Fact. Then I thought about it.

I decided I was afraid and that you might come to see if I wanted a fight "face to face"...

I've been thinking about getting a 20cal. I haven't had one in a very long time and sold all my 20cal pellets year ago. Back then they didn't import 20cal HW98's, only .177cal. Those are impressive results. I would say that pellet has a great BC. I need to see what it is.

I am sorry. I forgot to say. The pellet does have a pretty big BC at 0.030 according to Chairgun. It's the JSB Exact 13.73. The Exact Heavy .20 weighs in at 15.89 and shows a BC of 0.040 in Chairgun. Someone recently was saying his rifle liked the AA pellets best but that's the problem with the .20 cal, isn't it. Pellets for them are getting harder to find, hopefully that will change but, seems unlikely. They have been consistent with the first results. I noticed some fliers and so took the time to tighten the screws and loctite them. I also cleaned the barrel. I have not lubed rifle yet. It's shooting ragged one hole groups at 40 yards, ten shots into about an inch. I think the rifle will do considerably better than that but we haven't had a calm day in a week.
