HW97, the long and short of it

Let’s get straight to it, long story short (pun intended), I recently received what is supposedly a low production Weihrauch springer (approx 3-4 made per year): the 97 Long (385 mm) barrel in .177 with muzzle brake that extends past the underlever detent housing, exactly like the older 25mm HW97 MK1’s with 25mm internals. This has current spec 26mm internals.

Upon receiving, it got a good barrel cleaning and I shot it a bit. Stout cocking effort and a bit of a tight buzz but still grouping one hole at 11 yds seated. Obviously has the full power spring inside. Time to refine things a bit.

New spec Paul Short kit; complete powerplant with Titanium piston, tuned Rekord trigger unit with one of Paul’s custom made setback blades and an oversized, blued steel safety button.

First few shots left me feeling nostalgic and intrigued.

Nostalgic because it initially brought back a memory of an old TX200 Mk2 with custom made internals from Steve Pope (V-Mach)...But it seemed much faster, similar to my old Theoben SLR 88 FT Imperator .177 single shot, which also had ridiculously low recoil.

Intrigued because based on the ultra low recoil and smooth shot cycle characteristics I was very interested to know how much FPE it was putting out with JSB 8.4s. I guessed around 9.5ish FPE, definitely not 11 or above. Blasphemy, it was doing 790 FPS for a 11.64 FPE. Brilliant shot cycle.

“that new Weihrauch smell”

Kit fitted, on to the shooting:

35 yards, shifting wind, seated FT position, 32X on the March 5-32. 1st group shot was the left 1” black Shoot N See circle. 2nd group I held on the left edge of the circle because a flap of overhanging tape threatened to wreak havoc with my group therapy session😉. When there’s no wind you can call shots like a boss - lower mag and momentarily catch the pellet in flight.

Will have to add more pics later, doing this on a cell phone😀

Ive got one too in .20 cal that I got from Johnny...lol. being more of a hunter I'm going a little different direction with a hornet kit and seal from ARH. Looking for closer to 15fpe.

Man John that kit is the bomb!!!

Turned that thing into a laser beam and the video you showed me was incredible!

The gun literally doesn't move when fired !

I have a few 97's new and old, two older 25mm, two newer 26mm. I took the 25mm setup from one of my 77's and put it into the wood KT below which I use for FT. I kept the full power Vortek kit in with the 25mm setup as I shoot Hunter piston and want a bit more than 12fpe. The 25mm with the Vortek kit still gets about 13.6fpe with a milder recoil than the 26mm provided but lower powered. Still not sure I am going to keep this setup or go back to the higher power 26 setup which was around 15-16fpe and quite accurate.

51.5 yards with full power Vortek and 26mm piston, squares are 1/4''

Yes, nice to see others' rifles. Thanks for sharing guys.

Duckfish, I bet yours shoots nice, I have an old 77 (Mk1) with original 25mm internals and it's the real deal. Buzzy but very accurate, also never been opened. The quality of finishing of the internals have increased so much over the years. Specifically the:

- raised concentric machining mark rings on the rear trigger block face that (that the rear guide washer contacts);

- smoothness of the cocking slot (much less high areas to smoothen over), not quite to the level of the TX200 or even LGU slot, but noticeably improved compared to older 97s;

- rough breech face around the in leade (raised, concentric machining marks) which would contribute to breech seal damage and speed up the vicious cycle of lock-up issues/sealing, velocity inconsistencies and accuracy issues.

Still very impressive for a mass produced air rifle considering the price point. Never ceases to amaze me how tight the tolerances are when inserting the Rekord trigger unit back into it's slot in the rear block😉.

I still need to decide which route to take for my 77 long MK1...

DMM, I think your current set up at mid 13fpe is more than enough, unless you're not happy with it or just want to change for whatever reason. Happy to give some specific advice/options if you like, just give me a shout.

As far as the new spec Paul Short Ti kits go for the 97, they have an M3 delrin screw in the cocking slot, something that his previous kit didn't have. He explained what purpose it served, but I only remember hearing "cocking slot" (British accent + spotty signal!) so will ask him again. A pic Paul sent me:
