HW97 performance after broken main spring is replaced with Vortek kit

Bit of an issue with my R9 today. Recently it has seemed to lose power and accuracy. I thought maybe the spring broke but it was still cocking silk smooth. However tonight I felt / heard an unusual crunch at the end of one cocking cycle. The pellet was fired but when I recorked the gun it would not catch , or lock up any more? I thought maybe the trigger was adjusted a bit to light so turned the adjustment screw clockwise a few turns but no change. Is it possible that a piece of a broken spring somehow jammed in the piston cycle preventing the gun from fully cocking? I hope so . I had ordered a PG4 HO Vortek Tune kit a while when the gun lost power and accuracy , should be here any day. I hope I didn't adversely foul up the record trigger as it was adjust down to about 12oz. I adjusted it when I got the gun , which was 1 year and 10 days ago. I think there was a 1 year warranty on the gun and didn't want to attempt any work myself on the gun as would invalidating the warranty. I am about as far away from a airgunsmith as you can get. Guess it doesn't matter now. I am hoping when I do dissasemble it, I find a broken spring. Might be in a bit of trouble as don't have the skills to take apart the trigger unit. I should be able to tell when I pull the trigger unit out as if it won't click in with a screw driver, may have flipped something over inside.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Tear it apart. The trigger will be fine. Don't take it apart. That's inviting unnecessary trouble. You'll probably find a broken spring and possibly piston liner jamming against the inner guide or cocking shoe.

Remember disassembly goes trigger >spring >barrel >piston. Reverse the order on reinstall.

You can pm for my phone number if you'd like my help.

Good luck.

OK got it. Thanks Mycapt65. I got the trigger out , you were correct, It seems to work fine. I definitely didn't want to mess with that. I am about to take the spring out but not sure if I use the rail compressor I just purchased to help with popping out the 4 little blocks? Is it necessary to take some pressure of them? I'd give you a quick call but can't figure out how to send you a PM? Think I'll give it a try tomorrow. ,

Thanks again.

Sent you a pm with my number, and no you don't have to relieve spring pressure to knock out the square blocks.

Talk soon

Clever idea for a cheap but good spring compressor. Might just have to build one myself.

I built one like it. If you don’t already have the scrap laying around to build it, then it won’t be cheap! If you need something cheap get a Irwin quick grip bar clamp, the longest you can find. It will get the job done.

Unless you regularly work on springers, I would not spend the time and money to build.

Thanks for including the video. I have seen it but always good to review it again. This guy obviously knows what he is doing but I noticed he took the barrel of the 95 before he took the spring out so the bolt was under pressure? Don't think I'll be doing it that way. He also didn't need to remove the piston sleeve. When I install the Vortek PG4 HO tune kit , The sleeve has to come out. Is there any difference in performance, accuracy / power, between the Vortek PG4 HO and the installation of the new spring , guide and top hat he did here?
