HW97 pellet testing

Did some pellet testing today with the HW97 .22. This rifle for as long as I’ve had it always shot the JSB 14’s and FTT 5.55’s great. Been noticing more and more inconsistencies in tins so I find myself switching things up now and then. Weather Channel has the wind listed at 8mph today but feels more like 3-5 so that didn’t effect the groups too much. I shot 15 rounds of each pellet on a sighter target to somewhat season the barrel and find a hold point for my scope, then shot (4) 5 shot groups at 30 yards at the pictured targets. The JSB 18’s have my vote.

Im not sure if I loved or hated pellet selection shooting. I think I hated it. I've tried SOOOOO many pellets in my guns. I've settled on the "perfect " ones for each gun, and hope I don't run into the problems you did.

Sometimes it was so easy to tell if a gun loved the pellet, sometimes not so much. My sig asp would Scatter any flat headed pellet into a shotgun pattern, but my d48 loved them. My hw97 isn't too pellet fussy, but the hw80 is. My r9, I only tried two pellets, and they were comparable and shot well enough that I stopped searching.

By the way Sean, as always, nice shooting!

I think for the most part I’m down to the last tin or 2 of the questionable batches. A few of my more recent batches have been better.

Fine rifle and good shooting. It does look like the JSB 18s get the nod but It also looks like that one will shoot pretty much anything good enough to take it hunting. ;) It is always nice to have a rifle that you can use to clean out the junk pellets with and still have enjoyable shooting. Can't wait till my 98 comes back home. :)

This is probably my least pellet picky rifle, and I agree any of the tested pellets properly zeroed will be “minute of squirrel” inside of 35 yards

Do you lube your pellets? I have witnessed many ocassions where lube will improve accuracy on a springer!!! Quite simple to try if you gave never tried it.

I don’t. And to be honest I don’t think I’ll ever take that step. I don’t weigh, sort, or clean pellets. I give them a quick look before I seat them to check if the skirts are mangled. I shoot in my backyard, at paper and spinners, if I were to ever compete that might be an option.
