HW97 buzz stopped

Was shooting my 97 today and plugging along with it sounding like it always has and the next shot no buzz twang or whatever you want to call it. It actually caught me off guard, I thought what the heck. So I checked all the screws and everything was tight. Shot a few more and still no buzz. Broke out the chronograph and shot 10 over it.

after 500-600 shots. Today 1800 shots

avg. 869 avg. 821

Hi 872 Hi 826

Lo 868 Lo 817

ES 5 ES 9

SD 1.76 2.95

I then shot my best 3 brands of pellets and the next so so brands of pellets.

10 shots each at 20yds off a front rest and rear bag. Subtracted .175 of my calipers to get CTC.

Just wondering if this is normal or do I have something going on. The accuracy is still there but I’ve lost 48 FPS with the same pellet.

I hate to say it but when the same thing happened to me, I had a broken spring on the last coil.

Agreed. But, for me, if the accuracy is there I'd leave it unless you need the extra FPE. I'd milk every shot out of that powerplant until accuracy suffers, but that's just me.

At least all I can think of. It does feel a tad easier to cock but other than that and the sound is all you can tell something has changed. It’s still under warranty plus I believe since I bought it from AoA it has a limited lifetime warranty.

Probably a coil has snapped off, however it is not unusual to have a new spring collapse a couple coils as it gets broke in. Unfortunately they dont make springs like they used to. Mfgrs are looking to save money and a cheaper spring helps. Yep I know it is under warranty but....they will probably just open the gun and slap in another cheap spring, without cleaning out any metal fragments. If your happy with the rifle otherwise, forget the warranty and just do a simple tune with a good quality spring and all the required lubes. If it were mine that is what I would do..

I’ll probably just have it detuned to 12fpe after seeing how much easier it is to shoot now.

Please do not continue to shoot it until you have had a chance to investigate further. Spring steel is harder than the compression tube and could scar it causing further damage.

Detuning it to 12 FPE will be a great move. They are so much more mild-mannered at 12 FPE anyway. If you use a quality kit your buzz and twang will remain a thing of the past.

My HW95L .22 after an ARH kit & GPL-205 lube. Super smooth cocking and accurate. I believe that your piston seal has been damaged by dieseling as my HW95 FPS dropped by 50 FPS after the seal was burned.

That's seems early in the shot count for a spring to break but I agree with the other posts.

Looks like we found the problem. Putting an adjustable Maccari tune kit in it so should be good to go soon.
