HW/Weihrauch Hw95s versus Hw98 - pretending to spend money

I have a HW50s (the misses), and a R9 (the mistress), both in .177. I have no need for another gun, but I have a wandering eye and from time to time like to contemplate another break barrel. I have been slowly getting the hang of shooting my Hw50s, and in the winter I plan to make a new stock (Vana 2's influence) for the HW95 that will fit me and my scope better for Hunter Field Target. As I was contemplating what I might do, I took a look at the HWs on the Airgun's of Arizona website. I see that they have dressed a HW95 in an adjustable stock now (the HW95s) and it's on sale for $727. They also have the HW98 in it's adjustable stock for $780.

It seems to me that this match up is made for a comparison. The HW98 is a pound heavier, which I remember reading somewhere is meant to help stability. That may be so, but wouldn't that pound be a bit of a liability for standing shots?

With both guns in similar stocks, and very similar actions, what would you identify in your choice as swinging the difference one way or another? I'm curious what other's think. Has anyone actually got both of these yet?

The 98 has a more weight forward feel and works better for me in offhand shooting than my 95s (I have HW95L in both .177 and .20). I think that the HW98 forend is flatter and works a little better off the bench as well.

It (HW98) might not be as handy to some, but the extra weight is OK by me.
The only 98 I have is in .177 and when I shoot my 95L I find the .20 preferable to the .177 (smoother than the .177 in HW95 even kitted) and wish I had a .20 in the 98 as well.

Maybe try a HW98 in .22 or .20??

Otherwise, they are so similar when in the same caliber, that kitting the R9 might be a more cost-effective venture.

I was blissfully unaware of an HW98 "match" model. My commentary was directed toward the scope only version with the muzzle weight and bull barrel.

The HW95S that is at AOA is the Luxus stock that has an adjustable comb. The Luxus stock doesn’t really need to be adjustable because the comb is already to high for the supplied iron sights, for most people. The HW98S is the traditional stock with the adjustable comb. Kind of strange because this gun doesn't have iron sights and the stock is to low for a scope so the comb must be adjustable. Weihrauch has this bass ackwards in my book.

If you are planning on HFT, then the HW97K is the gun you want. That, and the AA TX200 are the most popular with HFT shooters.

@Croxton63 - Another vote for the HW97k. It is my most accurate springer out of them all. I recommend .20 if possible for HFT.

I have a 177 Hw97K and a 177 Hw95. I also have a R9, a Hw95 and a Hw98 in 20 cal. They all shoot well at times. Sometimes better than the 177 97K. Overall the 177 97K beats them all. It's not my favorite gun to shoot but it'd be the one to shoot if I were to shoot any of them competitively.

As far as HFT goes, IIRC range estimation and holdover is critical. For that reason I feel 177 would be a better choice than 20 because its much flatter from that gun. I could be wrong so go to a HFT meet and see what the other guys are using

Otherwise 20 Caliber is a fantastic choice for these poweplants. Its more powerful and a little smoother.

Thanks guys. I have no illusions about winning HFT even if I had the perfect gun I don’t have the mind to be a serious competitor! I have been going across the border and enjoying the good company of
other shooters (mostly PCPs) in Minnesota at the MAFTA club.
Some day I might get a TX200 or a HW97, being a lefty the 97 is easier to get hold of. That being said, I really appreciate the ease of loading a break barrel.
It’s really interesting to see other’s perspectives. I’m not a big guy and it has taken me a while to get used to the weight of a rifle, so I was really interested to see that Star 7 prefers to shoot the 98 off hand compared to his 95.

I woke up the other day being a shaky old man. No idea how that happened. I like shooting offhand and that extra weight forward is the major advantage of the 98. The 95 is certainly more agile.
