HW95 owners

I am currently doing some tinkering with my 95.

First question: what MOA is everyone getting at 25 yards?

Second: do you have a spring upgrade/tuning

Third: anyone ever take off the finish on the stock? What did you use? I want to refinish this with a grey wood stain.

Thanks

Good question. I have never stripped a rifle stock but here's what I would do. I recenty stripped some old furniture that had intricately carved panels. I used Citristrip. It's plenty strong on old finishes. It's a gel so it stays put. It doesn't dry out. It washes off with paint thinner or soap and water. It doesn't have a chemical smell.

Most of the stock should be pretty easy, the old finish will just wipe off. Wipe down with paint thinner and fine steel wool.

The checkering is more delicate. I would put a paper towel over the stripper and let it soak for an hour, or more. Then gently wash it off with paint thinner and a toothbrush. You don't want to rough up the wood or raise the grain. Repeat as necessary.

After the stock is stripped do a final wash with odorless mineral spirits.

Just my two cents.

Mine except for a set of Mac1 screwcups is bone stock and if I do my part (key words "my part"...lol) will shoot nickel to dime size groups at 25 yards.

As far as that stock, while it's very likely better quality Beech than other companies use, it is still Beech and can be a pain to refinish. Do your homework on refinishing tips for it before you start.

My three month old HW95 in .177 shoots well under a dime size 10 shot groups at 25 yds with new style Winchester hollow points straight from the tin. JSB 7.87 were only ok, but my last tin of 4.52's only measured 4.48~4.49 and fit loose in the leade. No Crossmans from the tin were worth mentioning.

Mine is 100% factory stock with some twang. A tiny bit less twang than out of the box, but twangy @14 FPE.

Do those Screw Cups help retain screws? Mine likes to screw out after a few sessions.

Yep. Also help keep the wood from compressing under them. Only problem is Mac1 hasn't had them in stock for over a year and the ones AoA offer aren't the same thing.

If you haven't already, try some Vibra Tite VC-3 threadlocker on the screws. You can snug and loosen them all you want without needing to clean and re-apply like you do with Loctite.
