I'm thinking about ordering a HW70 break barrel pistol and would anyone that has one I'd appreciate your opinion. My main concern is how hard is it to cock? I have a P17 and hate it as to me it's a bear trap to cock. So if the HW70 is anything like the P17 I don't want one. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Charles

It's a low power accurate fun shooting easy cocking Pistol. I have the Black Arrow version with the dovetail rail,

I have an HW70, and I find it to be quite accurate, and easy to cock. Its a great little shooter. I also have a nice old BSA Scorpion pistol that is very similar, and without the cocking tool it is much harder to cock than the HW70.

It's one of the best springer pistols, more accurate than a Webley Tempest and most other makes. It is very easy to cock.
However, despite the ease of cocking, the gun is quite efficient and will out power most SSP pistols incl. the P17 managing a good 440- 460 fps when run in. This is due to a short in-line TP and a reasonable swept volume.
Be warned however, that the gun does not have a blued finish like many shooters suppose. It's finish is similar to that of a Webley Tempest. A sort of satin baked on paint finish....Perhaps a better job than a Tempest finish, looking almost like blue.

Unless you just get a lemon I don't think you done wrong in the 70 .. the big negative with one is you'll be buying more pellets cause your enjoying shooting it ..lol

I have never owned an HW 70 (which may be a mistake judging by the previous responses!), but can vouch that just about any break-barrel springer pistol is easier to cock than the P17. Not only less effort, but the basic geometry of this layout spreads the effort to both arms and your chest.

I really enjoy the HW70 and highly recommend it. I have the standard HW70 and the Black Arrow. They are not pellet picky, I have had great success with pellets in the 7.0 range. Can hit cans at 30 yards all day long. RWS Basics, Hobby and Meisterklugens all work well. JSB RSs and HN Terminators (my favorite) work well also. These are Terminator 10 shot groups at 12 meters off of a bag.

I have weak hands, but can cock my HW70 reasonbly well, by tucking it in close to my body for added leverage.

Does the recoil of a spring piston pistol like this prevent you from using a rifle scope on it?
Also, how would a red dot do on it? Are they prone to breakage with a springer pistol?

Yes it does.
The reason being, a rifle scope gets limited eye relief (usually about 2-3 inches) so the pistol needs to be held close to the eye in the Taco hold (pistol held in crook of left arm) but this only works well with a pneumatic.
as the spring pistol will bounce off this supporting arm..
For many a year, I have long advocated the idea that a manufacturer come up with a red dot type sight of 1 x mag which employs a very fine cross hair .....imagine a Hawke Reflex or tube dot sight with a fine cross hair instead of a blurry dot and doing away with astigmatism issues ...
I couldn't get anyone to take up my idea....

My maximum pesting limit for the HW70 is 20 yards or less. Bird feeder is at 15 yards, grackles are drt. Rarely see grackles any more
