My HW50 is extremely accurate, but, like many Hw50s, it had a lot of buzz. I dropped in a Vortek kit and the buzz is gone but now the cocking shoe rides on the mainspring making a very annoying ratchet/washboard sound when I cock it. Any ideas on how to fix this?

It sounds like the tip of the spring guide is riding on the spring when cocked. I had a similar sound when I put a spring kit into my CZ 634 Slavia. It eventually stopped, never to reappear. Just a thought. RC

Not sure if it would be the same problem, but the HW30s have suffered the same problem as I have read. These 2 guns are basically, Me and Mini Me. Do a search around, there is a mod for this, just can’t remember what. I think it’s a small plastic insert that you can buy or fashion yourself.

I’m not sure if cocking arm galling would cause your issue. But did the factory installed insert to prevent galling get moved or removed when you dropped the kit in?

It’s definitely caused by the cocking foot rubbing the mainspring, I’ve never used a Vortek kit but have had it happen with Maccari kits.
Sometimes the foot will develop a tiny little “lip” of upturned metal at its rear, where it contacts the piston slot. This can easily be filed off and often solves the issue.

I would guess the vortek spring is slightly larger in diameter than the stock spring, I would possibly suggest install an inner piston sleeve so the cocking shoe doesn't directly contact the spring but not sure how this would work with the vortek sleeve as I don't recall how far into the piston the vortek sleeve goes when cocked.
Does it do this while cocking or only after its cocked and your returning the barrel to close the breech?

Not likely since vortek springs fit inside an outer spring guide. The vortek spring for my Diana 34 is .032" smaller diameter than the stock spring.The cocking shoe would only be able to touch the outside of the spring guide when cocking, not possible for it to contact the spring itself. I believe the same is the case with the HW50 based on looking at video's of that model.

I had an older R9 that had that problem. It had the old style cocking shoe that rode the Piston sleeve. I replaced it with the new style that rode the slot which fixed the problem. Ordered it from vortek.

Remove and then reinstall the Vortek kit. If the problem remains return the kit to them, and request a replacement.
(As the problem wasn’t there prior to installing the Vortek kit, a reinstall will eliminate any installation errors on your part, which logically then points to a problem with Vortek).

I removed the kit and put it in again, and now the sound is gone. Bizarre, but I'm not complaining!
