HW35 Low Power?

So, with 10.69gr pellets, my HW35 is shooting right around 345 fps producing 2.85 fpe. Since I’m very new to springers, I’m asking a potentially stupid question. Did the previous owner tune it down on purpose? He is dead now, so I can’t ask him. I tore the gun down, cleaned and re lubed with moly grease. The piston seal looked to be in good condition. When I took the gun apart, I noticed there was no preload on the spring. Is there a place for 3 fpe springers? I think I want a bit more power, maybe in the 12fpe area. I’m just curious if this thing is busted or tuned this way. There was a plastic guide rod with a few washers in the piston but no top hat.

Clearly something wrong in there. Sounds like yours may be a newer gun with plastic guide and seal. Springs do collapse or break eventually. Could be the previous owner tried to arrange a fix using extra washers and some kind of replacement spring. In any case, your solution is factory replacement internals from a place like airgun spares, or custom replacement parts or kits from air rifle headquarters or vortek. I would proably get a kit and seal and be done with it. Should be good for many years after that. And you will want to make some kind of spring compressor to deal with the preload.

If sitting around like storage maybe worth a spring, seal and breach seal..

That breech seal can compress from nonuse and loose some sealing at the breech block area. Theres some ways folks test one , but i never found them to be too conclusive..lol. I think a fresh breech seal is about 4.5 mm thick . I have to go check a new one if i have it in the shop ..

Lot of guys go with jm spring and vortex piston seal combo. Seems i recall A.O.A has hw parts like spring , and seals as well i do feel jm spring from AgH is a longer life / shot count part (opinion).

If a compressor is needed and i use somthing as this cheap ,easy ,does the job nice and can be used for other projects or jobs ..

For that gun id invest $70 in new guts and not think twice about it.. then you know its spiffy good to go..😉
Yeah, if you don't have a lathe to make a top-hat and decent spring guide, better off buying an ARH tune kit for the gun.

Man.... Wished id daid or knew you eere ordering ... Id of suggested get a extra piston seal and throw in a breech seal from him..

Reason to get a extra piston seal is incase you do a oops or a butterfinger moment and nick it or it's not so great fit or just dont seat in right you got a back up seal.. me im good at the oops. So i get a back up ..lol

Anyway looks like a plan and if all goes well it should be da berries.. i like it 👍

Well,
Got the kit installed. Also purchased some Moly Lube from JM. Did a proper lube job and also cut down a few spring coils to reduce the preload. Assembled and the gun wouldn’t cock. Did a bit of research and ended up removing the top hat. All is well now. Gun is shooting the CPHP at 775 fpe with a very gentle shot cycle. 10.5 fpe seems pretty good for this gun. Over a 10 shot string only seeing an es of 7. I’m happy! This gun is a dream to shoot.
