HW/Weihrauch Hw30/Olympia Hobby pellet test.

Because I avoid giving more money than I have to to China and all the great stuff I've seen out of Poland lately, I bought this tin of Olympia pellets on a whim from PA. I didn't realize they're labeled Hobby with no specified weight. PA lists them at 7.87 I suspect that's wrong and they're heavier.

You can see in this video
there was a bit of a breeze so I kept the testing to 25 yards and simply ignored the wind through the whole test. The rifle is my Laminate Hw30. It will give just about any springer a run for its money <25 yards and most past that.

The pellets and chrono results are on the target the numbers read Average- Extreme Spread and Standard Deviation.

The Olympia pellets varied a little in fit and it showed in the ES. The average fit was about the same as the other JSB made pellets. JSBs tend to be small to begin with. The power on the Olympia was markedly lower than the Others. It was also markedly lower in my Hw50. I suspect these are really closer to 8.5 grains. I'm too lazy to break out a scale right now. Incidentally they performed about as well in the Hw50.

My overall feel for these is, they're clean, decent pellets, but not a real bargain at 12 bucks a 500 tin. I'd say they're better than an average tin of Walmart Crosmans but not as good as a good tin of Walmart Crosmans. These however are typical soft lead so you won't ever have to scrub them out of a barrel. Since these are the "Hobby" version I'll try other versions from Olympia to see if they're on par with JSB. Olympia is made in the deep south of Poland. Not far from JSB in the Czech Republic. Interestingly they mimic the same weights as JSB.

I'll do more testing with these on a calm day with another rifle.

I shot the olympia through the R8 today and they did very well.

I broke out my jewelry scale and weighed 50 of them and did the math. My suspicions were correct. They weigh an average of 8.49 grains. Not 7.87 as PA advertises them. That puts them at 8.06 fpe out of my 30 which is more in line for that gun than 7.5 fpe.

These are clean and pretty uniform. I'll try their other domes for a buck more on my next PA order.

Have you tried the RWS R10 pellets. I know they are wadcutters, but I get no spiral from them out to 35 yards (my longest test) in both my Hw30 and my Hammerli. They cut the paper targets very cleanly.

Nice German made pellets. Best price is at Umarex.
Oh yeah! The R10 pellets are great! It's just that they're sometimes hard to find and expensive when you do. I seldom use wadcutters now that my short range pesting stopped. They're fantastic on squirrels under 20 yards from a healthy Hw30.

My HW30s does really well with the H&N Excite Econ II. It shoots great groups with those to at least 25 yards. They are very attractively priced. The Finale Match Heavy are even better; but cost about three time more.

Agree on the Econ IIs – they’re surprisingly consistent for the price. My HW30S gets ~0.4" groups at 25 yards with them at moderate power. I only use Finale Match for competitions – too pricey for plinking.

That's really good for cheap pellets. Is that measured and is that average or best? I've tried them years ago when they first came out and I was lucky if any gun got 0.4" at 10 yards in the basement at a table. Maybe they've improved?

Thanks the interesting follow ups! There's a big local gun shop that generally has little airgun stuff, but stocks several different H&N Excite variants at a good price. I will pick some up.

It's been so long as to be irrelevant now (like, before JSB even existed!), but I once tested a bunch of pellets and recall that the .177 RWS R10 convincingly smoked anything else I had in a bulk-packed tin. The only other pellet in the ballpark was the red tin Eley Wasp - back when they were still made by Eley.

I’ve shot multiple groups that are under .5” at 25 yards with the Econ II pellets and my HW30s. It’s also the same for my HW50s. It also loves the Econ II. At ten meters my Walther LG400 also shoots them very well. From a bag rest the Walther will place five shots into one pellet hole at ten meters. It is so much fun to shoot that LG400 from a rest. Now the Finale Match pellets will do better in all my rifles but they cost so much more.
