I have chance at a HW 50 S Black in .177 or .22. Not familiar with gun. Don’t care about stock. I can fabricate if need be. Also old prices before COVID. Have several Wiehrauchs 77’s to 98’s. I just shoot targets daily and small Varmints.

Is this a good rifle for the collection?

Crow

it’s a great rifle I have one in .20 that was a recent purchase from AoA. I also have a brand new HW stock , new style with the cutout Stock I’d sell.

The 50S is really the best shooting rifle that Weihrauch currently makes. The power level is perfect, the ppowerplant dimensions and shot cycle are perfect and the accuracy is stellar because of it.

The big negative though is the cocking lever. It makes the cocking effort very high for the power level, and in the earlier models the cocking linkage would gall and destroy itself from being overworked. Sometime around 2013-2014 they used an updated lever that helped with the galling but the cocking effort stayed the same.

If they would make them with a single piece cocking lever like the HW95, it would be a perfect gun.

But "as-is" they are still very very good shooting guns. In .177 at about 11fpe they are phenomenal shooters. I say you NEED one.

Crow I only have four rifles, an Lgv Challenger Ultra, Hw77 Stainless, Benjamin Titan and the Hw50S. All 22 cal. These photos and video were done a few months back and I hadn’t shot my rifles for several months owing to a health issue. I decided at the time to get off my but and see if the 50S was still putting them where I pointed it. Also no work has been done on this rifle.

This straight out of the safe, cold and no warm up, 5 shots at 30 metres. It’s my favourite rifle.

Edit: I can’t seem to upload the video it only appears as a photo ( last photo)

Cheers, and enjoy!

I know you already purchased but wanted to add my $.02 for anyone who reads this.

Cocking effort is pretty light for me. The gun, I feel is the perfect length and weight for a spring piston airgun. It can also be disassembled with ease with no spring compressor needed. Mine has a feel to it that very few guns real or air have to them. Lockup is super crisp as is the trigger and safety. Accuracy is superb. The gun's soft shot cycle really lends to this. And they are fairly quiet as well.

Mine in .22 delivers just a hair under 600fps with 16gr AA pellets.

Thanks :) I got it from froggy on ebay, it's a reinforced unit for a Prowler gas piston rifle. I slid it way down onto the barrel and 3d printed a brace so it is suitable for a cocking handle. It haso has a bit of felt and 1 cone baffle, so it is functional, too. Also has a sight post threaded in that was obtained from another generous member here.

A lot of times the plastic stocks just do not help with balance. Biggest problem... they almost always feel cheap. Certainly look cheap as well. This being a front heavy gun, a light stock would be super noticeable. I recon I could get by with weighting it... Possibly would be desireable for a gun that sees a LOT of rain....

As for the .20 I've been tempted to get one, but frankly, the .22 does the trick for me. I have other guns, and I REALLY like .22 for plinking. If it was strictly a hunting gun, I would go with .177

Thats interesting LGD as I had various 177 cal air rifles and my personal experience is that the 22 cal has been better for my hunting. I know lots of people say that with the 177 caliber the shot is flatter but I think the difference (don’t quote me on this ) is only half an inch at 30 metres with similar weighted pellets. I’m probably wrong but I never really noticed a big difference. Maybe other people with greater experience than me could advise.

Generally, I see a LOT of drop past 30 yards with .22 550-650fps Shoot, even at 75 yards @ 1000 fps the drop on a .22 is a LOT compared to a .177 going 900fps I mean a .22 21gr slug vs a 13.4gr 177 pellet.

I don't have any measurements, just experience in the field. I'll get my dopes set, but it's all relative to the reticle on the gun. I operate more on feel and experience than numbers. Do what works, repeat.

When I hunt, this sounds dumb, but I always take head or vital shots. Doesn't matter the caliber. If the hit is on point, it's a clean kill. Also, I only take vital shots with ~30fpe+ guns. I'll get headhot pass thrus with 500fps .22 on grey squirrel.

A few reasons I grabbed his gun is first off the price being set before Covid. Being a synthetic stock, nobody wanted it, I don’t like it. But it’s a small stock and I think it’s one that I will try to fabricate first hopefully this winter. If .22 is still there after I try the .177 and like it, I‘ll snag the .22 as well.

I just dropped a tree rat. I had 6 guns lined up to go in car (going to range). Had choice of .177 or .22.— R9 .22 was my choice. I prefer.22 over .177 for Varmints. Crow

Thanks LGD for your response. I’m still not convinced that there is much difference in poi between 177 and 22 cal at 30 metres. If you had two Hw77s in both caliber and they were dialed in for 10 metres and you shifted your target to 30 metres what would be the drop with say H&N 9.56 Greens in 22 cal and similar weighted pellet in 177?

I apologise Crow for hijacking your thread I think I’ll start a new thread and ask this question. Thanks again LGD.
