Huntsman's change of heart

Has this happened to anyone before? I bought about 30 tins of JSB 13.43 before the pandemic and still have about 20 tins left. The Huntsman hasn't been shot for 3 weeks and I also noticed I didn't have a 40 yard holdover mark for it. At forty yards I noticed the pellets were all over the place. I figured the barrel needed to be cleaned. After cleaning the barrel, I shot the 13.43 grain and the 10.34 grain. The 13.43 was still shooting the same but the 10.34 group were touching. I must've shot 50 pellets of each weight and the 10.34 out shoot the 13.43 everytime. This sucks because I only have about 5 tins of 10.34. Every pcp I've own has always stayed with the same pellet but the Huntsman had a change of heart.

@Wyshadow I have experienced something similar with my Edgun Lelya 2.0 with heavier pellets at 35 yards. I didn’t figure out what caused the issue. I also cleaned the barrel in attempt to remedy the issue. I think it could have been the pellets from a particular batch/lot number or maybe a MKI vs MKII issue. I also had some metal magazines that I stopped using. They didn’t seem to pair well with certain pellets. I’m really not sure which factor or combination of factors were at root of the issue. The gun did go back to shooting the way I was used to and has remained this way after cleaning the barrel, sticking with the lighter pellets, and plastic mags. It will shoot certain heavy pellets. I just have to refer to my notes for the different holdovers corresponding to them.

Do you have any DOPE notes on the heavier pellets from any other distances? Have you obtained any new mags? Have you performed any new tunes or replaced any parts recently?

i just bought a pellet gauge and was totally surprised at the difference in size of some of my jsb 10.3’s and 13.4’s. i have a tin of 10.3 that have a head diameter smaller than 4.46. a tin that are 4.50 and a tin that is 4.2. the 13.4 mrd’s are mostly 4.53 or 4.54. so it seem you really have to watch what you buy a bunch of. After cleaning my maverick which was shooting mrd’s great it didn’t shoot well sent about 15 slugs down the pipe and all was well again? who knows sometime

How did you detune for mine is if I remember right is 850ish? I will chrono when it warms up to be sure. Would be nice with more shots for I don't need a high fps. Thanks for the follow up.

I did not intentionally hijack this post, please forgive.

You can always just reduce the HST, but to do it right, and end up with a well balanced tune, you need to decrease the reg setting as well, since pressure is really the driver of air usage. Both adjustments are easy to do with the HW100, unfortunately, not so with the Huntsman.

I've never had a .177 that wouldn't shoot the 10.3. I just detuned my HW100 down to around 11 fpe, and it still loves the 10 g, and at that level, my shot count is about tripled, no noise, perfect yard gun.

To detune, was it just with reg pressure and hammer spring? TIA!!

Yes. I was told by someone who is supposed to know Weihrauch rifles, that the hammer and spring are the same in both the English home market 12 fpe rifles, and the FAC version, which is all that seems to come to the US. Mine shoots fantastic at that setup. I think many of us in this country are missing out on some of the best shooting air rifles due to our lust for power. Both the HW100 and the Huntsman were designed around the lower power levels, and at those settings, the shot count and accuracy are fantastic, at least that is my experience with this one.

When I first received my HW100 BP-K and seasoned the barel with CPUM 10.5s. I was getting nickel size groups at 50 yards and very happy with an inexpensive pellet. After a tin of 500 I pulled a couple Ballistol soaked patches through it followed by dry patches. Those nice groups became too large for my liking and the hunt for "the pellet" began.

Now 1,000s of pellets later, the CPUms shoot ok, but not nearly as accurate as thar first day.

Well, I don't have an answer, except to remember the old saying, "if it ain't broke.......". It's hard to imagine how that gentle pull-through cleaning could have done harm. Good luck. If it once shot that good, it can again.

The CPUMs don't shoot as well as before, but Polymags, JSB 8.44s, and Mako 10.5 slugs shoot fantasttic.

I thought it weird the CPUMS would shoot great at first, and now not so. Maybe they prefer a "new' barrel?
