Why not join a sportsman’s club? They typically have land “only members” can hunt. I belong to the Marbletown Sportsman’s Club. There are many others… Good luck!

Also, donuts and pounding the pavement helps. Take a couple dozen donuts and find dairies and farms which are prospective permissions. Regardless of yes or no or maybe leave donuts. Recently I didn't and I got a "maybe". I will head back in a couple of weeks with donuts. $50 in donuts can repay you with months of joy, aka think long term not short term with the wallet on this.

I don’t know where you are located but red squirrels can be hunted year round in NY. Just find Public hunting land and get after it. I do it all the time. Lots of airgun fun as they are fast nervous critters. Let me know where you are and I can give you some locations if you are close enough.
