My question to you all, would it be okay to shoot hunter supply 180 gr .454 45 cal cast bullets in my hp max 45. I can get 500 of those for $70 plus shipping. If they wouldn't hurt the barrel and shot well they would be a lot more economically to use for plinking and such.

I've tried various HS bullets out of various big bores. I found none that would group and most, if not all by now have ended up in the melting pot so I can cast bullets that are accurate.

I melted a lot of their slugs too. However, I did figure out a way to expand them for sizing and testing. I'd take a flat center punch that was just bigger than the smallest part on the inside hollow point cavity and tap it lightly with a hammer to expand the rounded base of the hollow point. It would add about .005" to the diameter of that first groove. It works with dish based swaged slugs, expanding the top of the shank as well as the dish base. Then I would resize the expanded slugs in a Lee or NOE sizing die.

Interesting. I never really went that far with it. Either way, seems neither of us have had much luck with the HS bullets as we get them. Shame, too, because some of them look really nice.

You should "slug" that barrel to determine what the inside bore diameter is. Then size the slugs accordingly. Those small diameter bullets shot out of the 45 Challenger were "keyhole" hitting the target at 10 yards, with a crazy big group. My Challenger barrel barely puts witness marks on a .457 round ball it is so oversized.

I think it was just the barrel, as the design does took like it would shoot and take deer easily.

Thanks for the feed back. I would rather buy ammo that shoots accurately than have a box of paper weights.
