Huma for FX Impact initial impressions

The Huma for my Impact arrived today, and I was quite anxious to get it installed. My .25 Impact was not performing at all like I wanted it to, or anywhere close to how my Crown performs with the same JSB pellets.

I had never removed a regulator from the Impact before so I reviewed the AoA, and FX Master tuning series on YouTube. The removal of the old regulator was straight forward and I had it done very quickly.

The installation of the new regulator took me some time, but this was due to my nervousness, and the fact I wasn't too careful removing it from the packaging (more on that later). If I have need to do it again knowing what I do now, it would take me a very short time indeed! It's quite simple.

So, the installation was a snap however, after putting the gun all back together I ran across something I absolutely hate, and should be changed ASAP.

The FX regulator uses hex wrenches for both the regulator housing, and the regulator adjustment screw. The Huma uses a straight edge. I really didnt think about that too much while I was putting the Huma in, but later it became apparent to me that this was absolutely idiotic.

To adjust the Impacts' stock regulator you use a hex wrench with a ball end. You come in at a bit of an angle, and it clears the trigger just fine. It's easy to make whatever adjustments you need without a lot of messing around. This isn't the case with the Huma at all. Since the reg adjuster uses a slotted screw, you cannot easily adjust the reg in a timely manner, because the trigger is in the way, and it's likely you'll scratch up the reg housing. I'll have to look into modifying a scewdriver for this purpose, but I shouldn't have to!

As far as performance of the regulator goes, I'm not sure it would be fair to comment too much as I'm sure it will take some time to "break in" and settle down. I can say that after running 78 shots thru it, giving the Impact a quick tune, the next 26 shots were:

According to my ProChrony:

852 Average FPS

19 fps spread

5 fps Standard Deviation

This is with a FX Impact, 700mm barrel, JSB 33.95 MK2 pellets, 130ish bar reg setting. The Impact is the most recent model immediately prior to the "X" version.

I was getting better performance from the stock FX regulator, but I'm sure the Huma needs to be broke in, plus I have to slow the average FPS down to where I prefer it (835ish fps), and I will be using the LabRadar at the range to finish tuning.

Notes:

Be very careful opening the package! There a some very small, nearly invisible bits, and also the little BV washers will come off the reg piston as well.

If I'm not mistaken, you ordered the Huma on the 8th of September, same day as I ordered mine.

Please offer any tips on installation that you think will assist me in removal and installation of my Huma when it arrives -- no matter how insignificant and redundant it may seem. I have never replaced any regulator before.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I use a long skinny screw driver to adjust the reg no need to remove trigger guard or trigger

The main thing is to be very careful removing it from the package, and keep an eye out for very small white disks.

If, like me, you have your washers fall off, the instructions are adequate in showing you how to install them. Use the standard configuration, and I found the easiest was to put them on the piston without losing track was to layout the washers in pairs alternating the pairs. For example, 1 pair facing up, 2 facing down. That way when you put them on they're already in pairs, and you won't lose tract of the aspect.

The instructions with the reg will have you go to www.huma-air.com/fitting-instructions

You can download and print those out now to get an idea. There is also a link in them to AOAs removal instructions.

You won't have to take out the internal O-ring that's left in the block after you remove the old reg, piston, and washers unless you have a leak already, or if you just want to replace it. That bigger is way in there so I hope you dont have to. My gun is pretty new, so I didnt.

Is anyone certain if these will fit in the Impact X? It doesn't mention on the Huma website. I would like to get rid of the whole "first couple of shots low" issue. Its a little frustrating in hunting situations sometimes. Have any of you testing these been checking the first shots after not using for a while?

James

I have an X and yes it does fit. Mine was is a prototype but I'm sure it will fit.

Txrpls.

How did yours perform on the first shot each time? This is the only issue I have with mine. ES and SD are very good otherwise and it's the only reason I would change.

I had no problem with my first shot, but I also had no issue with the first shot with the factory regulator either. I did have a problem when I had the power wheel on min the first shot was always slow with the factory unit. I called FX about the and Ernest said this is normal when not on max if you let it sit for a while. I have not tested with the Huma yet. I may have just been lucky, but my factory regulator only had an SD of 3.2 from a 60 shot string while I had an SD of 2.7 from 60 shot string. I think the Huma is better constructed and very easy to repair. There is only one small piece that can be damaged, and Huub provides several of those with the kit. I never damaged one, but I did not try to reduce the pressure without releasing all the pressure in the Impact.

I have inserted and removed mine regulator swapping Belville washers so many times that I think I could do it in my sleep. I like to tinker, so I had fun and gained a small amount of spread stability.

I'll be following this with some interest to see how the Huma regs compare. I don't think my factory reg has any issues, but it's been a while since I ran a shot string through it. I'm actually more interested in the high pressure option for the Huma. Do I understand correctly that you basically get the standard reg, with the extra washer that are needed for higher pressure? It would be nice if that's the case.

If you go to www.huma-air.com/fitting-instructions and download the docs, I think you'll see that the standard configuration has more washers, the high and low power use different positional aspects. I did think that was weird, but I won't know for sure what's up with that until I get my .25 700mm slug liner and opt for the high power configuration.

Hi Val, I have a question and a suggestion for you. First, what kind of regulator gauge are you using on your Impact? And my suggestion is for you to contact Sonny and ask him about setting your regulator up to 150-155 bar and shooting some MK1's at 50-60 yards and see what he says.

Your devoted friend, Chuck

I'm running Wika gauges, and they were a 10ish bar different than the fx gauge.

I have always heard that the mk2s were better out of FX rifles (plus I have 13000 of them), but perhaps I'll order a couple tins of the mk2s just to see.

I will speak to Sonny if/when I fail the next couple attempts at sorting it out. I'm a little concerned about the shot count with such a high bar setting, but at this point I'm willing to try nearly anything.
