Huge buck with Texan .45

What. A. Day. I’ve been spying on a huge buck for a while...figured him out just in time for the firearm season opener..Nov 15. Of course, no “firearm” involved because 1) too easy....... and 2) Michigan recognizes big-bore air rifles (and rightfully so!!) My advice to serious air gun hunters in “airgun friendly” regions...be patient, hunt like it’s a bow/crossbow and do ALL of your preparations with camo and scent control. Don’t try to be heroic with shots beyond what’s “crossbow lethal”. Big Bore airguns are no more lethal than crossbows on big game, so please hunt accordingly!! Shot with Nielsen Specialty Ammo 265 grain hollow point.

Very cool. I had to pass on a nice 7 point this morning. He was 60 yards brodside but had a limb covering just about where I wanted to hit him. Farther than my 50 yard limit too He had a doe with him and I figured he would give me a closer shot. Figured wrong! He turned and went straight away. Lying here in the tent listening to the rain. Suspose to quit. Maybe I will get another chance at him in the morning.

Nice buck...short story....I’ve been a bow only hunter for over 32 years, longbow, recurve, compound and now crossbow due to Health but when my son was old enough to rifle hunt I bought a rifle tag so I could take him out, anyway I had deer walking by at 40-50 yards and never took a shot, I had my 30-30 and due to all the years of bow hunting I got the mindset that I’ll never shoot over 30 yards and while sitting in the stand I let deer walk by that I could of easily shot but never did being I wanted them closer, my son shot a deer at about 110 yards with his 270 which was awesome..

Anyway I look at Airgun hunting the same way as bow hunting but I’m trying to change my mindset that I can shoot farther out then 20-30 yards. I don’t think I’d be comfortable shooting a deer past 75 yards with my Texan 45 even though I can hit a 5” metal plate at 100 yards, I just feel it more ethical shooting as close as possible if the game comes in, I will shoot yotes out to 100 yards when my HMx 357 gets here but before I do I’ll have lots of practice in..

Once again nice buck.....

Congrats on some nice backstrap. Been a bow hunter and competition shooter for almost 20yrs. Taken lots of deer, pigs and yotes with a bow and b4 that muzzleloader and powderburners. Hopefully the laws will be changing in Texas in the next year or so and allow bigbores to be used on deer. Plan on ordering a Texan SS after the first of the year to start using on pigs and rams.

Sorry for the delay, work has been crazy. Just want to say thanks everyone!! Also address a couple of questions.

@aa_limited I don’t know a deer hunter that doesn’t eat venison. So many amazing recipes out there! I’m all about free range, organic protein. Pests aside, if I kill it, I grill it, haha

@Glem.chally asked about the penetration of the bullet. It was a clean pass through by way of both lungs and the pulmonary artery. He went about 100 yards and crumpled

@Imold I love (and share) your philosophy on range. I like an impressive long shot on targets as much as the next guy, but getting within archery range of a deer is SO much more satisfying! If we wanted easy, we wouldn’t be bow / airgun hunters, right?

Thanks again to all!

Brian

"intenseaty22"Very nice! Thanks for sharing. I can’t wait till GA allows AG Hunting for big game & I actually have time to go out. Very happy for you.
Thanks, Much appreciated! (to all that commented)

Hopefully GA and other states will see the light. They need to realize that those pushing for airgun inclusion are usually very experienced hunters looking for a new challenge. Not a group you have to worry about tromping around wounding stuff. Whoever pushed for and got it passed here in MI is my hero. Would love to shake their hand and buy them a beer!

"RabbitDan"Wow Brian congrats man! That's an incredible buck! I've been going out with my 5 year old son but no luck yet, he's not exactly quiet in the woods haha . I've gotta come check out that Texan one day and maybe I'll get that big bore itch
Thanks, Dan, much appreciated. Would love to have you try out the Texan. Hopefully soon, I’m selling it to make room for something even more wicked. Keep in touch!
