Huben Huben GK1 Field Carry for Close Quarters Draw and Shoot Styled Hunting - Opinions Wanted

Over the weekend I was in two scenarios where I had a rifle on me and walked/stalked to within pistol range on some hogs. I spotted a pig running while crow hunting. I went to investigate the area looking for it and ended up crawling through a hog trail in a briar thicket. Eventually I found myself about 20 yards from a pretty big hog. By the time I got it's face in my reticle and decided what needed to be done it was at 15 yards and I was on my knee surrounded by briars. I shot it in the face from 15 yards with a 34 grain domed pellet from .25 R5M wounding it and causing it to run in the opposite direction. I was in a very vulnerable position that I was not prepared for, so my safety was on my mind. The next day I believe that I ran into the hogs again. I didn't shoot at because it was at dusk and I had not positively IDed the animals,. I was in some pine saplings, tall grass, and other undergrowth at the top of an embankment on the edge of the woods as the sunset. If a hog emerged from the brush in front of me it would have been about 5 yards. That is not enough time to positively ID and locate the animal through my scope (with limited FOV at a minimum 5x mag) in low light. Look at how the hog closed the distance in the last scenario and it didn't know I was there.

These scenarios can attest to exactly why I bought the GK1. However, I have yet to mount my red dot and I don't have a holster. I really need a holster that I can wear across my chest. I started to put it in my chest pack, but I don't trust the safety on the gun and I feel it is a risk shooting my self in a chest pack that it would move around in and possibly fall out of. In these scenarios I would've used the GK1. In the first scenario I would have tried to get at leat three shots in that hogs head if not half a magazine to try to kill it insteaed of run it off (I did shoot one braodsinde later that day). I opted not to shoot the hog between the eyes, because I didn't want to risk a ricchet off the forehead, pissing off the hog, and getting runover or mauled. The ability to get off multiple shots would have been a game changer let alone the report of an unmoderated GK1.

So again I'd like a holster that can accomodate a GK1 with the red dot reflext sight mounted forward on the dovetail rail, but can also cover the trigger with a strap that also covers the safty. I'd like the versatility of wearing the holter on my chest or hip. Do you all think this is fesible? If so where can I get such a holster? Is there anything I'm not thinking of that you all have any ideas about?

Custom made is always an option. There should be many in your neck of the woods.

You could have a holster made to fit a moderator as well if you find one useful later on.
Lotta of folks around that build and repair guns. But you did give me an idea. Thank you. No moderator. I want it loud for up close hunting. Either die or get away from me.

Here’s what I decided to try that was readily available. Toomy Leathers Holster for a scoped Huben GK1 pistol. Standard length. New England Airguns has these in stock.

The way I’ve been running the GK1 (with open sites) I really didn’t need a holster for a scoped GK1, but it’s what I got. My first impression is that it is decent, but not what I really wanted. However, it’s better than nothing. I thought it would be molded to fit, but it is not. It is advertised as such. As it arrived from the vendor, on the draw the front site hangs up inside of the holster. Hopefully once it’s broken in that will change. It is open on the muzzle end and will accept a GK1 with a moderator, although I don’t know how the draw would be with a moderator affixed.

A retention strap would be an improvement, but I knew it didn’t have one when I purchased the holster. The color scheme isn’t my bag, but there were no other color choices listed unless I opted for a holster with a single stitch which was a no go for me. I’m also not a fan of the rivets used on the holster. I suppose this Toomy Leathers holster will do for now. Eventually I find exactly what I want.

It makes me wonder about universal fit holsters. They have a lot of them for cowboy style revolvers and they fit a wide variety of guns reasonably well when you consider that they're leather and they typically cost about $30. Some are under $10 and for $60 you can get one that's molded to your specific revolver with all kinds of fancy leatherwork. Serious cowboy action shooters might laugh at them, but IMO most are just as good or better than that one you've got there. Sorry, but the front end of that thing is awful. It's not going to do a good job of retaining or protecting the pistol and it is going to catch on everything nearby.

The problem is that they don't fit many airguns. It seems to me that there could easily be a similar universal air pistol holster made of heavy leather and wide enough to fit a GK1. All I can find when I look though are Uncle Mike's type crap.

@Sawney Bean I figured I try something since I didn’t like some of the ones I’d seen others using with thier GK1s. I didn’t want a plastic one. I’ll let yall know how it goes.

My opinion about your scenario.......use a powder burner. Even a 22LR would be a better choice than a GK1 for hunting hogs.

Gotta say, I agree. A good .22LR would be fine for a decent size hog (I mean, they've taken world record bears in the right hands, so... A pig isn't impossible at all)...

Though, really, you might want to just get a five-seven of some sort, and then you're talking.

Update: So far I like this holster. To just wear at home it’s a nice fit It can be worn cross draw or as designed. So far my pistol hasn‘t fallen out with a reflex sight affixed. I’m not sure how it would hold the GK1 with a pistol scope mounted. Although it was not molded to the GK1, it feels as if it fits pretty securely within the holster.

I’m not a fan of metal holster clips. They can tear up belts. This one is no exception. Also the leather layers separate easily above the stitching in certain areas. I need to find a glue approach for leather. I’m absolutely clueless on what to get. Aside from these cons, so far so good. I still think it is a bit over priced, but it’s not an overpriced el cheapo IMHO. Time will tell how it holds up.

I'm still getting back to this custom theme for couple of reasons. I know you are wise and seasoned but everyone needs a hint every now and then.

First, I honestly don't believe there is anything even remotely satisfying to your taste and need readily available, especially online.

Second, if there was a place to have a holster made, it would most definitely be in Texas US. I would see this as self explanatory.

Third, having invested good money on quality products like Edgun and Huben, it would be a long lasting road of regret and self loathing if you stick to cheap non-functioning and probably dangerous solutions. Treat yourself.

Fourth, safety.
I'm not yet too familiar with Huben but I say this because of what I have read.
Personally I would really love to have the holster barrel end blocked slug proof in the hopefully never occurring accidental discharge. The energy one puts out would not be problematic to stop if the holster was custom made, and you have made clear you absolutely do not want a moderator.

Fifth, snug fit.
They make holsters that clamp around the gun so no need for all kinds of straps.
I would suspect some down time leaving the pistol in the shop but in my opinion well worth it. If you are okay with the red dot, it would be so easy for them to make you happy.

So, my short list would be:
Color
Texture
Snug fit, open top
Pellet/slug stopper
Chest/hip carry

I hope you find something nice 👍
