How To Shoot At Distance?

I am mainly a archery hunter always had powder guns but never really used the. At distance just 25 yards or so. Pcp has been my newest hobby and really enjoying it and would like to start shooting at different distances but not sure what works best hold over or clicks and not sure how do I get the correct clicks or hold over is there a program that works well and what is needed for results pellet weight and speed. Thank you any information will be greatly appreciated and hope everyone is staying safe.

I prefer empirical data. It takes a lot more effort, and air and lead...but i shoot because I like to shoot.

I start at 40 yards (my home rajge max), and shoot target every 5 yard down to 10. Then I go to the range and work from 45 to 110+ yards doing the same work. I tabulate the results, and for a click scope I will reset the zero at the apex of pellet, so any deviation from zero is all the same direction. One gun is PBZ (point bank zero) from 20-35 yards. The pellet will hit within one diameter above or below the crosshair within that range. That is one of my pest guns, and most of my pesting is done at that range. Win-win for me.

I find that process of shot charting buildsc confidence in my gun.

Same here, on the shooting part. I follow a different method for zero but 6 of one/1/2 dozen of the other. I"ve never used a "program" and probably never will.

Strelok, Shooter and Chairgun Pro are all great program to help you calculate your holdovers or to make a scope tape for dialing elevation. Whichever way you decide to go, it is just personal preference. I prefer dialing my elevation because I think it's more accurate, others will disagree and say holding over is faster. Again, it's just personal preference.

I agree with Jim and bandg. Even when you use programs like Strelok or Chairgun Pro, which will give you a great starting point, you'll still need to validate all of your aim points and make sure that the info the program gives you for an aim point is where your projectile is actually impacting. Even with the correct BC and velocity entered into whatever program you decide to use, the points of impact are never 100% accurate at every range, never! You'll need to validate at each yardage and fudge the numbers one way or another at some yardages to make your whole scope tape accurate for dialing elevation. Like Jim said, it's a lot of time, effort, air and lead, but if you really want to be accurate when you dial elevation at long range, you have to do it. WHich ever way you decide to go, good luck!

Have a good one! Stoti
