Tuning How to get that last bit of accuracy out of an FX Impact M3 tune?

...so when FX says the provided "factory tunes" are just a general guide: I think it's because once you put in the tune...it's never going to shoot exactly 890 fps (the desired speed of most pellets). It's up to you to adjust it from there, (should be real close).

...so I put in the "factory tune" for the 18.1gr pellets that was actually emailed to me by the FX USA tech department. My gun ended up shooting around 933 fps.

My question: Which of the 5 knobs do I adjust to shave that last 40 fps off my gun's velocity? ...or is that even what I need to do?

Stock 700mm M3, no CF sleeve. I do know I won't be adjusting the front reg (all calibers are 150 bar)

The best rule of thumb…is to tune hammer to the knee of the shot curve.

with the impact it’s often hard to do that with lower tunes, because of the massive plenum….and the that it’s not recommend to set the reg lower than 70bar

so what I would do, is set to lowest recommend reg pressure, tune the hammer to the knee.

and then close to valve adjuster till u have desired fps.

OK, I managed to figure out most of what your saying. (Thank you!) ...is this right?

1) The "hammer" is adjusted by the Micro and Macro wheels.

2) The "valve" is the large knob in the front (see labels)

3) Now I just need to know what does the "knee of the shot curve" mean? Is that some point in the shot curve graph?

I appreciate the help!

Knee should be the peak. But you want to be a little bit behind the peak. For me, this equates to maybe only 10-15fps, but there is a very significant amount of adjustment to actually lower the power that 10 or 15 fps. Because the curve kind of flattens out at the top.

Idk, hard to describe, but ideally you have the hammer and regulator dialed in at peak power output. Then adjust the hammer to back off of peak power some. Adjusting the regulator up a smidge can help the tune as well. Makes for a snappier valve operation, which will lend to less turbulence/vibration.

The valve adjuster is basically a bump stop that can make valve operation even snappier. But I would er on the side of moderation in using the valve stop. Ideally the valve would make a soft or mild contact with the valve stop.

Now you can always center a tune around a specific pressure range (I like 130 bar) and just dial in your other settings around that pressure.

This just blows my mind tbh, Nate could look back in the first thread when he asked all those questions prior to making his "tuning video". I'm sure it mentions there what the GD front knob does. Makes a tuning video to "teach" others (easy views) using the info people spoon-fed him.

A simple Google search asking "what does the front knob on an fx impact do?" Brings up some good hints. One being the manual... believe it or not it actually mentions it.

Then Dallas kindly fills another spoon of knowledge for Nate, then another guy asks again what the valve does lol. (After Dallas saying what it does)

Scratching my head as to what happened to doing a bit of searching yourself (even the slightest bit). There's literally 200 videos okf tuning an impact why not spend a bit of your own time to learn what at least the adjustable parts do, especially if you want to be some airgun educator.

Just my take don't mind me.

Don't you have videos on tuning these guns?

Am I in Bizzaro World?

Yeah, I made that tuning video but I don't actually understand what's happening. I thought it would end up tuned and now I have to film an M3 video. Obviously the M3 needs to shoot better than any gun ever on my channel. ...no pressure...

...so far I'm not impressed with this gun. I don't have an engineeiring degree, so I'm ready to give up and just send FX all thier stuff back. That still may happen if I can't get this thing to shoot. Spending hours and alot of money in lead to try and coax accuracy out of a complicated machine is not my idea of a good time. I would rather chase girls.

...but you guys are going to help me through this! I still don't get it all the way. This is why I never bought an MK2. I thought the markings on the M3 valve would make this gun user friendly. It did not.

Lets just put it this way: I'm a dumb guy...and there are also smart guys. Lets just say 60% of the world is dumb. If I can understand the M3 then I can explain it to all the dumb people in our native language.

I am either going to understand this and simplify it for normal people..or send back all this stuff. If the M3 is something the average person should not buy, I'll make a video about that.

also you probably think that I sit around shooting airguns all day. I can't afford pellets, so I literally ONLY shoot when I'm filming a video. In the last 3 years the ONLY time I shot off camera was when I taught my cousin Charity to shoot (Vixen video), and we burned through a tin of 18.1gr FX Tony had sent me (as payment for the video)....yes, 1 tin of pellets was my payment.

so sitting down every day and shooting is not something I'm set up for. I just need to sit down, start the camera, and 15 minutes later I want to be done.

.22 HP DW will be at my house in 2 days...daylights a-burnin!

filling in the blanks: I offered to do 10 videos for FX in exchange for barrel kits in all calibers + slug liner videos in each caliber. So I will need to tune it in about 15 more times....now I just scared myself! Time to sink or swim. If I can't get the .22 right I won't be opening these boxes.

Solid question. Have you cleaned the barrel? I'd advise a quick polish and wax as well.

It's hard to get these guns to not shoot.

Especially with the new superior liners.

But you do absolutely want your valve and pressure setting to be in harmony. That is always the first thing I address. Then, if it isn't grouping, make small adjustments downward in pressure or on the hammer. The valve tuner is just icing on the cake. But you don't want it to be too intrusive either.

At first you mystified me. Been watching all your topics for quite some time and wondering how is this guy making airgun videos and yet he seems to know nothing about how they work. What’s even more mind boggling is who is watching them? Maybe I’m out of touch with how things are done nowadays in the YouTube world and guys chasing a buck. Wouldn’t it make more sense to fully understand airguns then start making videos? Have you ever shown any love to the guys who opt to hold your hand on this forum by selling stuff for a great price? No, you do greedy things then apologize when you get busted on more than one occasion. Most of the good people on this forum are givers. You’re a taker and I’m sure I’m not the only one who sees this. This is why I won’t help you. It bothers me because your questions can be easily answered and explained but your motivation in this hobby is what I question and why I just said what I said.

I gave all my free time for 3 years and financed the whole thing. Is that not enough?

Yeah, you may be a little out of touch... I have never made money on my channel..I also never intended to. My channel has about 8 miilion views, I never monetized it (commericals). Now I have to monetize it because they shadow ban my videos othewise.

Get up to speed here:

Have you ever shown any love to the guys who opt to hold your hand on this forum by selling stuff for a great price?

So you want me to pay for all the guns on Airgun Channel, donate 40+ hours a week of my time making videos (for free), and also give stuff away when I'm already not even close to breaking even.

I showed my love by making free videos for 3 years. Sorry, that is all I have to give.

P.S. Your being filmed right now...this is all part of the M3 video. ..so let's all be cool. AGN should be the Hero, not the Villain in this story.

The FX tech depatment is going to train me on the M3.

...just wanted to see what AGN would say about it.

I should have known that was a bad idea.

I won't be checking back into this thread. Thank you to the guys who made the effort to help. Unfortunately things went sideways.

It's too bad this couldn't be a place dedicated to the advancement of this hobby.
