My first wife was tyrannical! She was the ultimate miser except when she wanted something, or mostly in her case, traveling away from myself and the kids. Nice person aye and BTW as narcissistic as can be, well heck she still is. I think she's on her 5th man and the poor guy she's with now is basically her manslave!
I remember a time in my early 20's when winter came and work got slow that I sold every gun I had to pay the bills. A couple years went by and my Dad gave me $150 for Christmas so I went down to the gun store and found a really neat custom rifle, a engraved Mauser in 243, so I put all $150 down on it with $150 remaining to finish the purchase. The time came due to buy it about 3 months later and I didn't have the all money to complete the purchase, so unfortunately the store owner would not refund it either. We did have CC cards though which my wife refused to use. It's laughable now thinking back how it would have only been another 6 months, including interest, to pay off the CC at $30 a month!!!
It was then that resentment began to grow against her much more than previously. Later on when I started my own business I'd do cash jobs and sneak a portion of the profits. I kind of regret doing this and I kinda don't! But that's how she was, always be a "you know what"!
The truth is I should have put my foot down early on with my SUPER STRONG WILLED WIFE! Maybe even divorced her right away, but at the time I was a very timid person. Hind sight is 20/20, right?!
Thankfully all that BS is in the past!!! My 2nd wife of 20 years is the opposite of the ex. I can, and have, bought anything I've wanted to, you know within reason. Ha sometimes I regret I did but she lets me make my mistakes and with each one I learn my own lessons. However she makes hers too and I cut her some slack.
Caveat, yes we have somewhat separate finances but that being said my wife is a very nice person and when times were hard she still let me be me.
I don't sneak stuff anymore and in fact I just tell her what I did and how it turned out. Half the time she's happy for me, and half the time she's laughing with me, 'or at me, if I deserve it', LOL! She says with a smile "you silly man you", lol.
