How did we get here? Not this site but...

How did we get to this state of advanced airguns and accessories? Growing up I had a 177 cal Daisey pump airgun with open sights. We set out cans to figure out POI and then went hunting. Any squirrel within 40 yards were pretty much dead-meat 9 out of 10 times. We didn't have fancy ammo, scopes or range finders. Don't get me wrong, I have 9 PCPs and lots of "good" stuff so this is not a "good ole days vs modern tech" debate.
 
It's called progress mate, or capitalism if you like. Like with everything, companies innovate to beat the competition and please the customers (actually, they just want to take our money). ;)

For me personally, I enjoy my powder burners just as much as my PCP's and springers. But I have a weak spot for vintage match rifles and the required skill set that goes with them. Shooting is fun, in any form or shape.

no other economic system has proven successful for so long. The issue going forward is jealousy and opportunism. There are many who covet the success of people, like us here on AGN, that can afford a comfortable life and luxury recreation like airguns.

watch out though because the current direction of society is such that our enjoyment of things we worked for is a sign of privilege that many feel we have not earned. The goal of these people is to take from us what we have earned and give it to those who have not.

the calls for redistributive "justice" are incessant and becoming accepted by more and more of the majority especially as the majority shifts demographically.

I for one pray that I'll die a peaceful death before those people take control of what passes today for society and of the American government.

For a laugh: Find a social justice warrior at a uni with a pretty good GPA. Ask them if they would be willing to knock a point off their average and give it to a deserving underachieving fellow student.

My son fits that description and my wife and I are visiting him this weekend at his university. I'll ask him that question. Should be interesting to hear his response.

All jokes aside I think a combination of gun control and our own simple need to compete brought use to the level we are now.
A select few people with some gunsmithing and or engineering skills who decided you know what I can do this... Now introduce the Internet a source of information and communication million times faster and free compared to trade shows and other expoes. Where out of professional competitiveness another tries to one up and ..... well you get the idea

I think what has helped the air guns is the price of rim fire and center fire ammo. The lack of shooting space, 45 years ago I could go just about anywhere and shoot rim fire guns, All the big pits were open and you could sight in your deer rifles, Ranchers wanted you to come take out the jackrabbits and the P Dogs,
Now here in West Texas every thing is closed off even the big pits,
I can remember walking around with a red rider bb gun or even a pellet gun at 10 years old inside the city limits, It was just a common site and we never got into any trouble that I remember, The alleys were great hunting spots,
Even in my back yard it takes time to set my table up, set my shooting pads up , set the targets up, fill the guns up , Set the fans up even in Sept its still in the 90s and 100s here and just very hot to get out doors and shoot, About 7:30 pm to 830PM is my shooting times before it gets to dark,
So the Question is how did we get here? I am not sure, But we all have some very good story's to tell, 
I think we young people 60-70-80 had a very different life we walk around our blocks guns in hand even rimfires and shot guns and no one even blinked an eye ,
we respected others and we got by with a lot of crap, Just because no harm done,

This is the main reason, same goes for Korea. I dont think they are allowed to use powder there for hunting either. 

well this + indoor target shooting?

Well, I think the biggest thing is the fact that any places left to shoot or hunt are getting smaller. So the faster power drop off of air guns is the best solution versus powder burners. Even the smaller calibers are dangerous. A .22 springer that can put out 750-950 FPS or so with a medium weight pellet is great for small game & will work better in these limited area situations we are now faced with in many parts of the country. That's my take from where I live.

.....and if "they" succeed at taking away firearms, next they will go after air guns as well. Countries already have restrictions on how powerful an air gun can be.
