Homemade/Handmade stock: Build Process

This has been a project on my bench for a while. I designed it pre Helene, then came Milton. Shop had 42” of the Gulf of America in it…lost just about everything I couldn’t get up. Anyway…here goes. Aquired a nice blank, and a chunk of Ebony…drew up my design.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall in your shop and watch you work. Thanks for sharing and connecting us through some of the processes. Fascinating work.
Well……you’d better like the heat…no A/C in the shop, and you have to really dig Tom Petty…oh yeah…I hate when flys land on me when I’m working. Other than that…you’re welcome anytime! John

Spectacular!! You are a true craftsman!! What type of finish did you use on the stock?
I wish I knew for certain….my Dad did a lot of stock work, and it was in the stuff I kept when he passed away. They are little glass bottles with whittled wood stoppers, labeled stock oil. Some custom brew he made up. He would have loved to show me how to do this kind of work, but I was into motorcycles, girls, and pulling the trigger, so I’m figuring it out myself. Anyway….many coats applied a drop at a time, and sanded in thru many grits of wet/ dry paper. After the grain was filled, I knocked down the gloss with 4f pumice, and a soft bristle brush. Then brought up the sheen with rotten stone, rubbed out with mineral oil. Thanks for your kind comment. John
